Family of Robert Stadler, profession saddler, of Granville County, North Carolina

Later his family lived in Caswell County NC.  In the1790 census there is a John Stadler in Caswell County, perhaps his brother.

In Engle’s “Notes and queries: historical, biographical and genealogical, relating chiefly to interior Pennsylvania 1896 I recently found the following:

Jacob Stadler, B. 1727 in Greinsheim, Palatinate: immigrated 1731. Married, August 6, 1751 Maria, m.  n. How, b. Feb. 24 1731, in London, England, who came to Pennsylvania via Georgia, in 1740.

Issue:

i.                     Maria, b. June 22, 1753.

ii.                   Robert, b. May 8, 1757.

iii.                  John, b. May 31, 1761.

Notes: I can’t find “GreinsheimGermany on MapQuest or the Mueller Gazetteer.  I did find Grein, Gremsheim and Greisheim in the Gazetteer.  On MapQuest I found Grein in Hessen, only about 6 miles East North East of Heidelberg.  Gremsheim is in Niedersachsen about 25 miles South South East of Hanover.  Greisheim was not found.

Searching the IGI for a Jacob Stadler born about 1727, I found a Johann Jacob Stadler born 4 Feb 1727 to Johann Georg and Magdalena Margaretha Stadler in Erpolzheim, Pfalz which is less than 2 miles from Freinsheim.  Since Freinsheim is in the Palatinate I believe that area would be the place to do more research.  However I found that Magdalena Margaretha Stadler remarried and had two more sons named Johann Jacob Hubach so the possibility is that her son Johann Jacob Stadler did not live.  I contacted a Hubach researcher in Germany and he suggested “Greinsheim” could be Geinsheim which is also in the Palatinate (Pfalz).

It is also very unlikely Jacob Stadler immigrated in 1731 as he would have been about three years old.

I have other extracts of Church records that give the maiden name of Mary wife of Jacob as Mary Stow.

Mary Stadler married William Dunton 14 May 1772 (IGI record) Jacob was living so Mary must be his daughter not his widow.

In the online Pennsylvania Archive, American Revolutionary service, I found that Robert Stadler of Philadelphia had been called to service in July of 1777 remarks “can’t be found lives in Virginia”

A Robert Stadler is in the tax lists of Loudoun County Virginia in 1782 in Cameron Parrish along with Jacob and John Stadler.

And Robert is also in a list of 1788 with a John Stadler.  (This is a different location than the Abraham, John and Jacob Statler of Shelburn Parrish (see group 8))

Fauquier County where Robert Stadler married Mary Shanks is just south of Loudoun County.

Conclusions

Jacob Stadler of Philadelphia died between 1774 and 1779.

Since Jacob Stadler of Philadelphia and Robert Stadler of Caswell County, NC were both saddlers by profession I believe that they are most likely father and son.
