In reading the early tax lists of Earl Township Lancaster County I found a Casper STATLER in the 1758 listing his occupation as weaver living with Henry Carpenter.  In 1759 is “Casper with Carpenter” no last name.  After 1759 no Statler names were in the Earl Township tax list until Rudy in 1770.  Now it is extremely unlikely that this Casper is the Somerset County Casper born 1743 since he would have been 15 to 18 years old in 1758 and was never listed as a weaver and didn’t marry until as least 1763 (I would think later about 1765)

Rudy in Earl Township, Lancaster County tax lists 1770-1778:

In the 1777 List he is listed as living with Jacob Carpenter.

In 1780 when he became a Captain in the Militia was the same time as Jacob Carpenter became his Lt-Colonel.

We have Casper Statler (and possibly family) living with Henry Carpenter in 1758

We have Rudy Statler/Stotler with Jacob Carpenter in 1777

Who are the Carpenters?

They were early Swiss immigrants to Pennsylvania.  The original name was Zimmerman and the information about them mentions how important it was for them to learn English.

The Henry Carpenter in the 1758 tax list is the son of the immigrant Henry and was a doctor and ran other businesses.

Franklin to Somerset County

All the "Histories" say Casper moved to what is now Somerset right after he married but the tax lists tell a different story.  He is listed by various spellings in Antrim twp Franklin County 1766 to 1776 and not in Bedford (now Somerset) until 1776.  The land he held in Antrim Twp was probably the land of Casper Walter, which he bought from Ephraim Walter in 1769 but didn’t record the deed until 1793.

Many online trees give the parents of Casper and some of the others as “Christopher and Catherine Margaret”.  I do not believe this.  I believe the source was “Two Hundred Years in Shade Township” by the late Leroy Baldwin.  As far as I know he never shared where he got the information.  There was one Christopher and he was married to Catharina Margaretha in Colonial America, but his surname was STETTLER and he had his children baptized in Pennsylvania 1740-1750 and ALL were females.  See Group 1.
