KENTISBEARE.

The rainfall records kept by Mr. A. E. PAINTER at the school house, Kentisbeare, showed a reading on only two occasions. On Ash Wednesday the slight fall of snow registered .01, whilst on February 23rd there was a fall amounting to .02.

The funeral took place in the Churchyard at Kentisbeare, on Sunday, of Mrs. Susan MELHUISH, who passed away at the advanced age of 82 years, at Sainthill, where she had been living with her daughter (Mrs. BIRD). She formerly resided in Kenstibeare, her husband having predeceased her nearly ten years ago. She had been an invalid for a considerable time. The funeral service was conducted by the Rector (Rev. E. S. CHALK), who also officiated at the graveside. The family mourners were Mr. and Mrs. BIRD (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. H. BIRD, Misses M. and D. BIRD, Mrs HUTCHINGS and Messrs. F. and E. BIRD (grandchildren), Mr. F. VEALE and Mr. J. TRUMP (nephews), Misses VEALE and HUTCHINGS (granddaughters). The sympathisers included Mr. T. HOWE (Bridge Cottage), Mr. and Mrs. H. LEATT, Miss SPARKS, Mr. A. LANE, Mrs ROOKLEY, and Miss BAKER (Sainthill). The bearers were Messrs. H. LANE, V. RUGG, H. SPARKS, and W. GOFF. The coffin was of unpolished oak and brass furniture, the breastplate being inscribed: “Susan MELHUISH, died 2nd March, 1932, aged 82 years.” There were many beautiful floral tributes.

The monthly meeting of Kentisbeare Women's Institute was held last week at the Wyndham Arms Assembly Room. The chair was taken by Mrs. FROST, senr. (vice-president), and opened with a hearty rendering of “Jerusalem.” An invitation had been sent to Plymtree Institute, and a good number attended. An interesting address was delivered by Mrs. LEE-NORMAN, of Plymtree. The judging of a bulb competition was also carried out by Mrs. LEE-NORMAN, and the President of the Plymtree Women's Institute. There were two classes, the one for three specimens in a pot, and the other for a single bloom. In the former Mrs. HOLMES was awarded first and Mrs. R. MILTON second, whilst for the single bloom Mrs. LEYMAN secured first and Miss HOWE second. A round of interesting games was arranged by Mesdames H. and G. FROST, O'BRIEN and R. MILTON. Mrs. O'BRIEN and Mr. H. RUGG were in charge of the thrift stall, whilst the members and their guests from Plymtree were hospitably entertained by Mrs. R MILTON assisted by Mesdames KEEN, MITCHELL, HILL and WHITE. An invitation was given by the Plymtree members to attend their birthday party on March 17th, which will certainly have a ready response. Mrs. H. RUGG was elected as delegate to the London conference.
