HEAVITREE WORTHY


LAID TO REST WITH GREAT RESPECT.


Amidst manifestations of general regret, the funeral took place, at Heavitree, yesterday, of Mr. William CREES, of the “Bays,” Heavitree, who for twenty years connected with the Prudential Life Insurance Company, and who was well-known as a local poet. The service, both in the Church and at the graveside, was performed by the Vicar (Rev. T. J. PONTING).

The chief mourners were: - Mrs. CREES (widow), Mr. W. CREES (eldest son), Mr. C. H. CREES (son), Miss E. CREES (daughter), Mrs. STEDMAN (sister), Miss CREES (sister). Mr. M. F. STEDMAN (brother-in-law), Messrs. G. and W. HAWKINS (brother-in-law), Miss B. CALLWAY (cousin), Mr. F. HAWKINS (nephew), and Mr. J. H. ALSOP (friend).

The polished elm coffin, heavily furnished bore the following inscription on the breastplate:- “William Crees, died April 27th, 1903, aged 48.”

The coffin was borne to the graveside by Messrs. J. SCOBLE, G. MANLEY, S. STONE, R. N. SLATER, F. BOVEY, and J. H. MUGFORD, all of whom being members of the Exeter section of the Prudential Life Insurance Company. The Company was also represented by Messrs. F. F. BROODBANK (Superintendent), J. W. HUGGINS (Cashier), and Messrs. F. A. PARKHURST, W. B. CHANNON, A. H. THORNE (Crediton), E. W. BOON (Exmouth), J. SLADE (Polsloe Park), and W. J. COLE (Central Assistant Superintendent). The Agency Staff were represented by Messrs. J. LOARING, A. A. KESTELL, J. MITCHELL, R. PULLEN, D. J. RICHARDSON, W. H. WEBBER, W. MEAD, J. HILLMAN, J. SHIPCOTT, RICKARD, R. ANDREWS, S. J. LAVER, W. G. MANLEY, A. E. MAY (Topsham), C. W. PARKHURST, G. W. BROODBANK, W. ISAAC (Broadclyst), DRAKE, BRADDICK (Pinhoe), F. E. CROSSING (Alphington), H. ROGERS, G. J. DARKE, A. E. DENNER, Kennith MACKENZIE, S. RICH (Kenford), H. J. SAXBY (Starcross), J. BRAY, J. McDOUGAL, KIRBY, KELLY, G. WEBBER, W. H. CANN, PERRY, M. D. QUICKE, AXORN, ATKINS, BRYANT, F. AVERY (Newton St. Cyres), H. COUSENS (Crediton), MOUNSDEN, LOVEYS, FROST, KENT, etc. Mr. W. H. ROWE, a past Superintendent, was also present, with Mr. A. SEARLE, a late agent.

Others who attended were the Revs. D. FOULKES ROBERTS, Barton LEE and R. W. ROWE, and Messrs J. R. NARRACOTT, Joseph HAYMAN, John HARRIS, D. McARTHUR, J. TOZER, E. J. COX, C. KEEPING, A. M. ALFORD, C. WILLIAMS, Henry BREALEY, W. FINNIMORE, G. SEARLE, E. C. HALL, S. HILL, B. BOULT, J. F. IRWIN, J. WEST, W. A. COOK, J. MADDOCKS, NOBBS, J. G. E. WILLEY, W. W. EVANS, E. OLDREY, and W. WATLING.

The wreaths were exceedingly choice and numerous, and included tributes from the widow and family, an everlasting wreath from Mr. S. DAWE (late Superintendent of Exeter District), and several other agents. There was also a handsome wreath of artificial white flowers, termed “In affectionate remembrance of William CREES, from his brother workers.” The Superintendent (Mr. F. F. BROODBANK), and Chief Cashier (Mr. J. W. HUGGINS) of the Company sent lovely wreaths.
