AXBRIDGE LICENSEES' HOURS.

MAGISTRATE'S CANDID CRITISM.

At the Axbridge Petty Session on Monday (Mr. C. L. F. EDWARDS in the Chair), Mr. W. A. ROBERTS, on behalf of the licensees in the Division who were members of the North Somerset Licensed Victuallers' Association, applied that the hourse <sic> of opening for houses in the Axbridge Division should be from 10 o'clock until 2 p.m. and from 6 to 10 p.m. on week days, and from 12 o'clock to 2 and 7 to 10 p.m. on Sundays.

It having been stated that the hours suggested were identical with those authorised at Weston-super-Mare, Dr. GREY also addressed the Bench on behalf of the licensees on the Weston side and said that if there were different hours for the houses on one side of the street to those for licensed houses on the other, as it were, a difficulty would be presented.

Continuing Dr. GREY said the hours in the Statute appeared to have been “pitched” into the Act, and with great reverence and humility he suggested the convenience of the public had not been considered at all.

The Chairman: “What do you expect from a Government which created the conscientious objector.” (Laughter). “They have not the confidlence <sic> to say “These are the hours” but they encumber the whole thing with provisions, rules and regulations. They have not the pluck to say “Do so and so.”

Mr. W. H. C. STILING on behalf of the two off licence-holders said whilst not opposing the application he desired to point out that Messrs. BURNETT & BILLKID, wine merchants, Highbridge, would have to do all their business in the morning.

The Chairman said the Bench were unanimous in granting the prayer of the petitioners for “on” licensees, but could not see their way to make any different to “off” licensees.
