FIRE IN CLIFTON BASEMENT
Brigade Prevent It From Spreading
A fired broke out yesterday in the basement of 25, York Gardens, Clifton, the residence of Mr. E. A. OATEN, but it was prevented from spreading by the Fire Brigade.
Mrs and Miss OATEN had gone out shopping, and usually stay out for tea, but yesterday decided to return home, a fortunate decision as events proved.
“As soon as we opened the door,” Miss OATEN informed a reporter, “we detected something burning, and on going to the top of the basement stairs, saw clouds of smoke and flames. I telephoned to the Fire Brigade, and the fire was quickly put out. It would certainly have proved a serious matter if we had not returned as we did.”
Considerable damage was done.
