CIVIC HEADGEAR.

GRAVESEND CONCILLOR'S COMPLAINT.

Because he thinks the varied headgear worn by Alderman and Councillors on ceremonial occasions is undignified, Councillor Frank OATEN asked the Gravesend Town Council on Wednesday last week to decide on a uniform type of hat. While most Councillors have worn silk hats with their robes at official functions, others have appeared in bowlers and trilbies.

Councillor S. BURGESS, a former Labour M.P., supporting Mr. OATEN's proposal, expressed the view that it was the Council's duty to “remove the impression that the Councillors are a set of comedians.”

The Council rejected Councillor OATEN's suggestion. A proposal made was that there should be a public appeal to defray the cost of providing suitable headgear for the members of the Council.
