MAYOR'S TRIBUTE TO FELLOW WORKERS

TAUNTON V.A.D. FUN FAIR

SCHEME FOR NEW QUARTERS

Members of the 23rd Men's Detachment of the Somerset V.A.D., with their wives and friends, organised a big fun fair and sale of work on Saturday in the Station-road Garage, formerly occupied by Messrs. HEDGES, Ltd. It was placed at their disposal free of charge by Mr. A. E. HEDGES, now of Torquay.

Throughout the afternoon and evening large crowds visited the many stalls and side-shows which had been arranged as efficiently as on a fair ground.

The effort, the second annual one, was in aid of the funds of the detachment. Money is needed for uniform and equipment, and with subscriptions it is hoped to start a fund to buy a site and build training quarters. The work of the detachment is growing so quickly that the rooms in the Territorial Hall are unequal to the demands, and there is not enough room to drill the members.

Subscriptions received before the fete amounted to £35. The organisers wish to thank the subscribers, and also shopkeepers and others who gave goods to be sold at the stalls.

MAYOR'S TRIBUTE.

The opening ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Taunton, Dr. A. J. H. ILES, who was accompanied by the Mayoress.

Dr. ILES has been actively connected with the detachment since its early days, and has been its Commandant and Assistant Commandant. He is now an Assistant County Director of Red Cross for the Taunton district.

The Mayor was introduced by Mr. A. J. WALTON, Commandant, who paid tribute to Dr. ILES' work.

The Mayor said since he raised the 23rd Detachment more than 25 years ago he had often had cause to be proud of them, but never more than that afternoon. It was a fine record to give to others what they had obtained by working in that way. He hoped that the new scheme for providing training quarters would be successful.

A bouquet was presented to the Mayoress.
