PIG-KILLING ERROR

STOKE ST. MARY CASES DISMISSED

At Taunton County Sessions on Saturday, Albert Edward VILE, farmer, Arundells Farm, Stoke St. Mary, was summoned for causing a pig to be slaughtered for human consumption contrary to the terms of a Ministry of Food licence, and also for producing bacon at his premises not in accordance with this licence.

William Thomas THRESHER, slaughterman, Henlade, was summoned for slaughtering the pig contrary to the terms of the licence.

Both defendants pleaded guilty.

Mr. F. W. WILLMOTT, prosecuting for the Ministry of Food, said that on March 23rd Mr. James VILE, of Haydon House Farm, obtained a licence to slaughter a pig at his farm. Mr. J. VILE, in applying for the licence, stated that the pig was being fed and kept at Haydon House Farm and that he wished to slaughter it there. The pig, however, was killed on the premises of his son, Mr. A. E. VILE.

Mr. J. VILE was 84, and having regard to his age, the Ministry had excused his offence. The object of the regulations was to ensure a correct record of pigs slaughtered; a person was limited to killing two a year.

WRONG ADDRESS.

VILE said the pig belonged to his father, who sent the food for it to Arundells Farm. His (defendant's) wife filled up the application form for the slaughter licence, and inadvertently put in his father's address.

Defendant added that he did not see the licence and his father, when he signed it, was ill in bed.

THRESHER said that in killing the pig he acted on the instructions of Mr. A. E. VILE.

The Chairman (Mr. A. C. MOLE) said the Bench felt that there had been a genuine mistake, and therefore they would not records convictions. The cases would be dismissed on payment of £2 10s (advocate's fee and costs) by VILE and 8s costs by THRESHER.
