SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON THE WEST SOMERSET RAILWAY, NEAR BISHOP'S LYDEARD.
On Friday afternoon four men were brought in a waggon to the Taunton and Somerset Hospital, having sustained injuries more or less severe from an accident that occurred on the above line on the morning of the same day. It appears that a number of men were employed between Bishop's Lydeard and Combe Florey, in completing a bridge in readiness for the opening of the line which was to have taken place on Saturday last. The work had been carried on the whole of the night, and about nine o'clock on Saturday morning a truck overturned and a quantity of ballasting came down upon the unfortunate men which completely buried them. Their names are Aaron HAYES, of Hillfarrance, married, injury in the head; Richard CASE, Widdicombe, single, back injured; James MATTOCK, Stogumber, married, fractured leg; Francis CASE, Widdicombe, single, ankle-injured. With the exception of the last, the injuries are serious, and it is at present hardly possible to say what the result may be.
