FIVEHEAD.

An inquest was held in this village on Saturday, before Mr W. W. MUNCKTON, coroner, on the body of Miss Mary Sophia Louisa LAMBERT, 19 years of age, daughter of the Rev. R. W. LAMBERT, vicar of Fivehead and Swell. The young lady had been visiting at Redland, near Bristol, and, feeling unwell, Mr GREIG, a surgeon, of Clifton, was called in. She got worse and returned to Fivehead on Monday. Mr LAMBERT, being anxious to know her condition wrote to Mr GREIG for particulars. On Friday morning the answer was received from Mr GREIG stating that Miss LAMBERT's mind was unsound and that her tendencies were suicidal. Everything likely to be dangerous to her was removed. In the cupboard in the back passage was a bottle which had contained carbolic acid, and which was supposed to be empty. About quarter past ten on Friday evening Miss LAMBERT fetched a glass of water, into which she poured the carbolic acid and drank the whole of it. Upon her return to the sitting room, Mrs LAMBERT at once discovered what her daughter had taken, and sent for Dr. HUGHES. An emetic was administered, and Dr. HUGHES, who arrived shortly after eleven, applied the stomach pump. He, however, saw that the case was hopeless from the first, and death resulted about six o'clock on Saturday morning. Dr. HUGES <sic> Stated that half a teaspoonful of the carbolic acid would cause death. The Coroner expressed his deep sympathy with the Rev. Mr and Mrs LAMBERT in their bereavement. The jury returned a verdict that deceased poisoned herself while in an unsound state of mind.
