CORRESPONDENCE.

[TO THE EDITOR.]

A HARD CASE.

SIR, - The man TALBOT, whose case has been so prominently before the public this week, has kept the Dolphin Inn, King-street (a rather rough neighbourhood, by the way) for twelve years. The case against him was that of selling a quart of beer to a woman who declared it was wanted for a traveller; but the policeman sent for it and paid for it. Now, sir, is it right to catch a man with such a trap as was thus prepared for TALBOT? The police first offer the inducement to commit an illegal act, under cover of an alleged necessity, and then forthwith hale <sic> the victim before the magistrates, with the result that he is muleted in a fine of £5 and costs, to be paid the same day. What makes the case more distressing is the fact that TALBOT has eight children, and Messrs HANBURY and Co. will give him an excellent character. By the way, it seemed strange that the magistrates were so anxious to endorse the licence, though it was not even asked for by the superintendent of police.

Trusting you may find room for these few remarks,

I remain, yours, &c.,

Taunton, June 5th, 1891

FAIR PLAY.
