TWENTY-TWO PEOPLE RENDERED HOMELESS AT TRULL.

On Thursday afternoon a serious fire broke out at Farthings, Trull, as the result of which four cottages were destroyed, and twenty-two people rendered homeless. It appeared that about four o'clock Mrs OATEN, who is somewhat of an invalid, and lived in the second of the cottages, was endeavouring to make her fire burn more brightly, when a large piece of lighted paper was carried up the chimney and set it on fire. The sparks very quickly settled upon the thatched roofs of the cottages, and in a very short time all four of them were well alight. Fortunately a meeting was being held at Chilliswood?, close by, and upon the alarm being raised help was forthcoming. The flames had, however, obtained a strong hold on the buildings, and as there was no water available nothing could be done except to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining out-houses, and to save the furniture in the cottage. Mr H C? SWEET, Mr WAKEFIELD, Mr DREDGE, Mr HAWKINS, the Rev. J. H. SOUTHAM and others were able to effect those two objects. All four cottages were gutted. No. 1 was occupied by Mr HILL and his wife; No. 2 by Mr OATEN, his wife and five children; No. 3 by Mr DAVEY, his wife and five children, and No. 4 by Mr POPE, his wife and four children; Mrs POPE had been confined the previous evening, and considerable difficulty was experienced in removing her. The cottages were the property of Mr DENING, of Comeytrowe. Mrs SWEET took charge of the children, and provided them with tea, and subsequently arrangements were made for the temporary housing of the homeless families.
