Deceased, who was born at Hillfarrance in 1839, was, previous to coming to the town a coach-builder at Bradford-on-Tone and Bishop's Lydeard. On entering the town he became the licensee of the Parade Hotel, and a short time afterwards purchased the Royal Mail Hotel, in Station-road, of which he was the proprietor and licensee for about 25 years, retiring from business in 1898.
