DEATH OF MR. W. H. HAWKINS.

LENGTHY BUSINESS CAREER.

The death occurred at the Taunton and Somerset Hospital on Saturday morning of Mr. William Henry HAWKINS, coal merchant, of 27, Eastbourne-road. Deceased had been in excellent health until the previous Wednesday, when he entered the Hospital for an operation. His passing, therefore, was a great shock, and caused profound sorrow in the neighbourhood. The late Mr. HAWKINS, who was a native of Ruishton, had been in trade on the same premises for something like 35 years, and as he had taken over from his stepfather, the late Mr. C. GILL, the business has been in the family for nearly half a century.

Before the days of motor-cars, a large posting connection was maintained, this branch of the business having been developed by deceased's step-father, who was a Crimean veteran. Of late years considerable hauling for private companies and public authorities had been done.

Deceased was connected with the Victoria Wesleyan Church, and had been leader of the Men's Bible Class. He was also keenly interested in cricket, and after being a member of the Church Club for several years he was appointed captain.

Taking a great interest in the United Ancient Order of Druids, the late Mr. HAWKINS belonged to the Pride of John Need Lodge, No. 613, of which he was a past chairman and a trustee.

Personally deceased won the esteem of all who knew him, and the news of his death was heard with much regret. He had reached the age of 62, but was unusually active. He leaves a widow, one son, and five daughters, with whom sincere sympathy is felt in their sudden bereavement.

The funeral took place yesterday (Tuesday afternoon at St. James's Cemetery.
