TAUNTONIANS' APPOINTMENT.

JOURNALIST – J.P.

An old Tauntonian, Mr. Frank OATEN, M.J.I., of “Quantock,” Arnold-road, Gravesend, has been placed by the Lord Chancellor on the Commission of the Peace for that borough, and was sworn in on Monday.

Mr. OATEN, who is also a Labour member of the Gravesend Town Council, is the second son of the late Mr. H. C. OATEN, of Albemarle-road, and an old Taunton apprentice. During his early years he was closely identified with Mary-street Unitarian Chapel. Leaving Taunton in 1892, he became reporter on the “Ashbourne News,” Derbyshire, from which town he often visited, at Derby, his old School-master, the late Mr. W. G. COLE, the first head-master of Mary-street Day School, and the Rev. John BIRKS, formerly, and afterwards for a second time, minister at Mary-street Chapel, and at that time minister of Friar Gate Chapel, Derby.
