SHOCK OF AN EARTHQUAKE IN SOMERSET. - About ten minutes past five on Saturday morning last a shock of earthquake was felt in the valley of the Parrett, between Langport and Stoke-sub-Hambon. At Martock a low, rumbling noise was heard, which lasted for a few seconds, and beds and houses simultaneously shook. At Tintinhull and Stoke-sub-Hamdon the shock was felt, the noise being described as similar to something flying rapidly past the windows. At East Lambrook the houses were shaken, and the people were awoke by the rattling of the glass and of the furniture in their bedrooms. At Seavington the postman distinctly heard the shock, which resembled a train passing the house at full speed. At Compton, South Petherton, the shock was felt by several persons, and one woman was so much frightened that she either fell or rolled out of bed. At Muchelney and Kingsbury, near Langport, people were awoke by the rattling of lamps and windows. The morning was fine and frosty, with no wind.
