DEATH OF MR. ROBERT COATE OF STATHE.

It was with great regret that the inhabitants of the district heard of the death of Mr. Robert Coate, of Stathe House, which sad event took place on Saturday afternoon last, at the age of 76 years.

Deceased was held in high esteem throughout the district, being a great friend to the poor and especially his employees.

Formerly carrying on the business of a withy merchant, the late Mr. Coate was the pioneer of the withy buffing industry in Somerset, in which he engaged successfully for a number of years. He retired from business about 15 years ago.

The late Mr. Coate was for many years a member of the Sedgmoor and Aller Moor District Drainage Boards. Deceased leaves a widow, three sons and a daughter to mourn his loss, and much sympathy is extended to them in their bereavement.

The funeral took place amid every manifestation of sympathy and respect at Stoke St. Gregory churchyard, the service being conducted by the Rev. H. F. S. Gurney, vicar of Stoke St. Gregory. The family mourners were Mrs. Coate, widow; Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Coate, Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Coate, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Coate, sons and daughters-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Guy, son-in-law and daughter; Messrs. R. R. N. Coate and F. L. H. Coate, grandsons; Miss May Coate, grand-daughter; Miss House, sister-in-law; Mr. H. Knowles, cousin.

Among the large number of people present were Mr. E. Reed, Mr. J. Sherrin, Miss Sherrin, Mr. and Mrs. Dawbin, Mr. P. Sherrin, Misses Butt and Coate, Messrs. J. Coate, - Lucas, M. Sherrin, Mr. and Mrs. H. Trivett, Messrs. F. L. Hunt, M. Stacey, H. T. Brown, Wm. House (Parsonage), J. House, H. House, T. Uttermare, J. Barrington, R. Barrington, H. M. Hembrow, A. Shire, S. Shire, F. Hector, B. Hector, C. Coate, R. Coate (Corner House), F. W. Burrough, R. Bryant, Misses Talbot and Lockyer, Mrs. Westcombe.

The handsome coffin was of English oak with solid brass fittings, and the inscription on the breastplate was:-

"ROBERT COATE,

DIED MAY 20TH, 1922,

AGED 76 YEARS."

The bearers were Messrs. G. H. Chard, W. Cummings, J. Keirle, J. Pope, W. Coate and A. Harding. The funeral arrangements were carried out in an excellent manner by Messrs. Mead Bros., Ltd., of Langport.

Butt, Mrs. and Mr. J. Coate, Mr. and Mrs. W. Hook, Mr Knowles, Miss House, Mr. E. Reed, Mr. and Mrs. Shire and family.

MRS ROBERT COATE AND FAMILY desire to thank all those friends who so kindly sent flowers and messages of sympathy to them in their bereavement.
