PITNEY

FUNERAL.- The funeral of the late Mr. Joseph Scriven, who died at Somerton Hill, on Saturday, June 21st, took place on Thursday of last week, in the parish churchyard. Previous to the interment a service was held in the Congregational Church, of which Mr. Scriven had been a member for many years. The service was conducted by the Pastor, Mr. W. F. Glover, who also officiated at the grave. The hymns "Lead kindly light" and "Peace, Perfect, Peace" were sung. A large number of friends had assembled as a last token of respect, and joined the procession to the churchyard. As the cortege left the church the Dead March was played by Miss D. Cooksley. At the conclusion of the service at the graveside, the hymn "Jesu Lover of my soul" was sung by members of the Congregational Church choir. The chief mourners were Mrs. J. Scriven (widow), Mesdames Butcher, Curtis, Hill, Pope, Sweet and Cox (daughters), Messrs. Curtis, Butcher, Pope, Hill, Sweet, Cox (sons-in-law) who also acted as bearers; Misses? C. Hill, S. Hill, E. Pope, A. Pope, Mrs C. Hill, Mrs S. Hill, and Mrs. A. Pope, and Miss E. Pope (grand-children), Mrs. J. Cullen (sister). The coffin which was of polished elm and panelled, with brass fittings bore the inscription "Joseph Scriven, Died June 21st, 1930, aged 78 years, 'Rest in Peace.'"

A large number of beautiful floral tributes were sent from the following relatives and friends: From his sorrowing wife, 'Peace, Perfect Peace, Just gone on to Jesus'; In loving memory of dear father, from Louie, Charlie, and family; In loving memory, from Mary, Tom and family; In affectionate remembrance from Rose and Bill, Swindon, R.I.P.; In ever loving memory from Bessie and Walter; In loving Remembrance from Fannie, Tom and family; In affectionate remembrance from Annie and Henry; In affectionate memory of our dear father from George, Jim and William, New York; In loving memory of my dear brother from A. Brown and family; In loving memory from Ellen and Lizzie; In loving memory from Jim and Evelyn Cox and family. - Mr. Scriven was formerly in business as a market gardener and was well known and respected by a large circle of friends. In politics he was a Conservative, but owing to failing health took no prominent part in public affairs. At the evening service at the Congregational Church on Sunday, the Pastor in the course of his sermon said Mr. Scriven was a splendid type of a happy Christian, with a deep consciousness of the real presence of Christ, a man who could say with Job of old " I know that my Redeemer liveth," His life was a great testimony to the love and faithfulness of the Living Saviour. His constant presence at the services, and his consistent life would be a great loss not only to the church but to the neighbourhood. We could thank God for such a life that had tabernacled among us for a season, and was now called to take some higher duty for the Master whom he loved and served so faithfully. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. W. J. Stuckey, of Long Sutton, who also supplied the coffin, - Mrs. Scriven and family wish to express their warmest thanks for the many tokens of sympathy they have received in their sad bereavement.
