FIVEHEAD.

RECOGNITION SERVICES. - The recognition services in connection with the settlement of the Rev. J. COMPSTON, late of Leeds, as pastor of the United Baptist Church at Fivehead and Ile Abbotts, were held in the chapel at Fivehead on Wednesday, when the Rev. G. W. HUMPHREYS, B.A., of Wellington, secretary to the Western Association of Baptist Churches, was the preacher. At the close of the sermon, Mr. HALLETT, one of the deacons, made a statement on behalf of the Church as to the steps which had led to the settlement, and Mr. COMPSTON followed with an address, in which he gave an account of his life as a Christian and as a minister, and stated the views of Divine truth which he purposes to teach. The ministers of the district, with the deacons of the Church, then gave to Mr. COMPSTON the right hand of fellowship, and welcomed him to his new sphere of labour. After tea, which was served in the school-room, and to which a numerous company sat down, a public meeting was held in the chapel, under the presidency of the new Pastor, and addresses were given by the Rev. J. TETLEY, of Taunton, on “The Pastoral Office;” Rev. E. CURTIS of Hatch Beauchamp, on “The Responsibilities of Church Membership;” Rev. W. FRY, of North Curry, on “The Ordinances of Christ;” Rev. L. PALMER, of Taunton, on “The Importance of Religious Decision;” Mr. E. GOODMAN, of Taunton, on “The Value of Personal Efforts;” and by Mr. J. THOMAS, of Creech, on “Working, Watching, and Wrestling.” The chapel was tastefully decorated with flowers. During the meeting it was stated that an effort was being made to raise £310 by next May, which sum is required for clearing off the purchase money of the manse and orchard, for some improvements in the chapels, and for the erection of a small chapel at Ile Brewrs, the site for which has been given by a member of the Church.
