FIVEHEAD

FUNERAL OF THE REV. R. W. LAMBERT. - The funeral of the late Vicar of Fivehead with Swell, who died at Clifton, Bristol, on Tuesday, the 3rd instant, took place at the Fivehead Parish Church on Saturday, the 3rd inst. The corpse was brought from Bristol by the train due at Langport at 11.1 a.m., where it was placed upon a funeral car and conveyed to Fivehead. The coffin was covered with beautiful floral wreaths and crosses, sent by relatives and friends. The car was followed by two mourning coaches, containing relatives and friends of the deceased, viz. :- Miss LAMBERT (only daughter); Mr. H. F. LAMBERT and Mr. S. H. A. LAMBERT, Clifton (sons); Mr. William CROSS (Clifton), Mr. John CROSS (Newton Abbott), and Rev. T. W. CROSS (Tiverton). At the top of the village, opposite the deceased's late residence, the procession was joined by Mr. and Mrs. BARRINGTON, of Langford Farm, Fivehead; Rev. Edward FRANCIS (Baptist minister), and all the principal parishioners. The corpse, which was carried upon a bier by eight old parishioners, was met at the entrance to the churchyard by the clergy. The Rev. J. CORVAN (curate-in-charge) read the opening sentences of the burial service and the psalms; Rev. J. STUBBS, of Huish Episcopi, read the lessons; and the Rev. C. L. PEMBERTON, of Curry Mallet, conducted the service at the grave. The other clergymen present were the Rev. W. ALFORD (Drayton) and the Rev. S. O. BAKER (Muchelney). The choir sang hymn 225 (A. & M.). “Brief life is here our portion,” and the Te Deum, Mr. THOMAS presiding at the harmonium. Following the clergy and preceding the corpse were the churchwardens of Fivehead (Messrs. M. GENGE and J. HARCOMBE), Mr. C. J. HALLETT (churchwarden of Swell), Mr. Francis MEADE (Langport), Mr KIRKBY, and Mr. LENTON (parish clerk). The deceased was interred in a walled grave, the sides of which were lined with moss and flowers. In addition to the wreaths above-mentioned, many were presented by the parishioners as marks of love and esteem for the aged pastor who had laboured among them for over 48 years, and the village showed many signs of mourning. The Rev. Richard William LAMBERT, who was 87 years of age, graduated at Pembroke College, Oxford, obtained the degrees B.A. (1823) and M.A. (1826). He was ordained priest at Bristol in 1824, and was presented to the vicarage of Fivehead, with Swell, by the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, in 1840. He was some time master of the choristers of Bristol Cathedral, and Vicar of Churchill, Somerset.
