Cheddon Fitzpaine is a parish, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Taunton and Taunton Dean, union and county court district of Taunton, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Taunton, diocese of Bath and Wells, 2¾ miles north-by-east from Taunton. The river Tone runs on the south of the parish, and the Taunton and Bridgwater canal and the Bristol and Exeter railway pass through it. The church of St. Mary, restored in 1861, is a handsome edifice, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and tower containing 5 bells. The register dates from the year 1589. The living is a rectory, yearly value about £584, with residence, and including 79A. 2R. 6P. of glebe, in the gift of John Henry Warre, esq., and held by the Rev. Samuel Hope Unwin, M.A., of Worcester College, Oxford; The Ven. Hugh Hyndman Jones, M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, formerly archdeacon of Demerara, is curate in charge. Here is a school for children of both sexes, supported partly by some small bequests and a voluntary rate. There are charities of £7 10s. yearly value. John Henry Warre, esq., is lord of the manor and chief owner of the soil. Mr. Hale owns Maidenbrook, and Mr. Poole, The Grove. The soil is clay, stone brash and sand; subsoil, clay, gravel and ragstone. The crops are wheat and barley, roots and grazing land. The area is 960 acres; rateable value, £2,473; the population in 1871 was 305.
