FIVEHEAD is a parish and village, 5 miles south-west from Langport station on the Bristol and Exeter line of railway, 6½ north from Ilminster, and 8 east from Taunton, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Abdick and Bulstone, Langport union and county court district, Crewkerne rural deanery, Taunton archdeaconry, and diocese of Bath and Wells, on the road from Taunton to Langport. The river Ile runs through this parish. The church of St. Martin, an ancient Gothic stone structure, has a chancel, nave, square tower with 4 bells, clock, south porch, and private chapel on the south side. The register dates from 1654. The living is a vicarage, with that of Swell annexed, joint yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held by the Rev. Richard William Lambert, M.A., of Pembroke College, Oxford. There is a National school for boys and girls, and a Sunday school. There are quarries of blue and white lias limestone here. The land is now much sub-divided. The soil is gravelly clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, beans, root crops and teasels. The acreage is 1,721; rateable value, £2,829; the population in 1871 was 481.

CATHANGER, 1½ miles west, and MOORTOWN, 1½ miles east, are tithings in this parish.
