ILE (or ISLE) ABBOTTS is a village and parish, 135 miles from London, 6 south-by-west from Langport station, on the Yeovil branch of the Bristol and Exeter line of railway, 5 north from Ilminster, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Abdick and Bulstone, Langport union and county court district, Crewkerne rural deanery, archdeaconry of Taunton, diocese of Bath and Wells, situated on the west bank of the river Ile. The church of St. Mary, which has been restored, is a stone building, in the Decorated style, having a chancel, nave, aisles, transept, tower with 5 bells, and south porch: the church is at present under repair. The register dates from the year 1685. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £100, including 5 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held by the Rev. Edward William Saul, B.A., of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a school for boys and girls, and a Sunday school held in the school-room. The School Board are about to erect new schools here. The baptists have a chapel here. The charities are £5 4s. yearly. The manor belongs to the Duke of Cornwall, and the Uttermare family are the chief landowners. The principal landowners are H.R.H. the Prince of Wales as Duke of Cornwall, the Uttermare family, and Mr. Pine. The soil is gravelly, and the subsoil is blue lias stone. The chief crops are wheat, beans, and oats. The area is 1,935 acres; rateable value, £2,950; and the population in 1871 was 381.
STEWLEY is a hamlet and tithing, about 2.5 miles south-west.
