Shepton Beauchamp is a village and parish, 4 miles north-east from Ilminster station, in the Western division of the county, hundred of South Petherton, Chard union, Crewkerne county court district, rural deanery of Ilminster, archdeaconry of Taunton, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The church of St. Michael is a stone building in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, having a chancel, nave, aisles, tower with 6 bells, clock, and north and south porches, with side chapel. The register dates from 1600. The living is a rectory, yearly value £365, with residence and 17 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Mrs. Coles, and held by the Rev. V. S. S. Coles, B.A., of Balliol College, Oxford. There is a National school for boys and girls, and a Sunday school is held in the National school-room. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. There are charities of £60 yearly value, £35 of which are for apprenticing poor children. Here are almshouses for aged people. Mr. Thomas Naish is lord of the manor; and Messrs. John and Thomas Naish, and T. S. Donne, esq., are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy loam, and the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are wheat, beans, and flax. The area is 836 acres; rateable value, £2,663; and the population in 1871 was 696.
