MONKTON (WEST) is a parish and village, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Whitley, Taunton union and county court district, Taunton rural deanery and archdeaconry, and diocese of Bath and Wells. The village is situated on the main road from Taunton to Bridgwater, and is 4 miles north from Taunton, 7 south-west from Bridgwater, and 160 from London. The river Tone, the Bristol and Exeter railway, and Taunton and Bridgwater canal pass through the south part of this parish: in the northern part are several quarries, from which are obtained good building stone, and a vein of very hard road stone. The church of St. Augustine consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and a fine ragstone tower, of the date of Richard II., the proportions of which are very good. The parish register dates from the year 1704. The living is a rectory, yearly value £750, including 55 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. William Chapman Kinglake, M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, who is the present rector; the Rev. Frederick C. Kinglake, B.A., of Christ Church, Oxford, is the curate in charge. There is a good Parochial school. The charities are £30 yearly value. Walford House, the seat of R. King Meade-King, esq., J.P., D.L., is a handsome structure, erected about 70 years ago on the site of an ancient house, and is surrounded by well-timbered park-like grounds, especially rich in elm and oak of large growth: the grounds are situated partly in the parish of West Monkton and partly in that of Creech St. Michael, the two parishes being divided by an ornamental stream of water which intersects the property: the shrubberies and pleasure grounds exhibit some remarkably fine specimens of rhododendrons and other choice evergreens; and a handsome camellia house adorns the western side of the mansion. The other principal residences here are Sidbrook, of Mrs. Besley; Gotton House, of Miss Trower; Springfield, of James Paine, esq.; and Monkton House, of Miss Minet. Viscount Portman is lord of the manor, and the principal landowners are Viscount Portman, R. K. Meade-King esq., Mrs. Besley, Capt. G. Beadon, James Paine, esq., Miss Minet, Mrs. Kinglake, Henry M. Blair, J. Winter, and Mathew J. F. Brickdale, esqrs. The soil is in the lower parts of the parish rich alluvial; subsoil, old and new red sandstone, and various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots and there is some pasture land. The area is 3,079 acres; rateable value, £9,810; and the population in 1871 was 1,067.
Bathpool, is a hamlet, 2 miles south of the parish church, where are considerable flour mills belonging to Captain Beadon R.N., who has here a fine castellated mansion, situated on the river Tone. The Independents have a chapel here.
GOTTON is a hamlet, about 1 mile west of the parish church.
