To the Churchwardens and others the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of South Petherton in the County aforesaid to convey, and to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Kingsbury Episcopi in the county aforesaid to receive and obey. These,

WHEREAS Complaint has been made by you the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of South Petherton aforesaid, unto us, whose Hands and Seals are hereunto set, two of her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, in and for the County of Somerset aforesaid, (whereof one is of the Quorum,) that Charlotte PRIDDLE the wife of Stephen PRIDDLE and their two children (namely) Caroline now aged about three years and Ellen now aged about one year and a half born in the said parish of Kingsbury Episcopi after the marriage of the said Stephen PRIDDLE and Charlotte his wife and one child named James now aged about five years born of the body of the said Charlotte PRIDDLE in the said parish of Kingsbury Episcopi before her marriage with her said husband lately intruded themselves into your said parish of South Petherton there to inhabit as Parishioners contrary to the Laws relating to the Settlement of the Poor; and are become chargeable to your said Parish of South Petherton

We therefore upon due examination and enquiry made into the Premises aforesaid, and on the oath of the said Charlotte PRIDDLE and another this day taken before us in writing or otherwise, do find and adjudge the same to be true. And we do also adjudge that the last place of the legal settlement of them the said Stephen PRIDDLE and Charlotte his wife the said Caroline, and Ellen their children and the said James the child of the said Charlotte PRIDDLE was and is in the parish of Kingsbury Episcopi aforesaid.

THESE are therefore in her Majesty's name, to order and require you the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of South Petherton aforesaid, that you, some, or one of you, do forthwith remove and convey them the said Charlotte PRIDDLE and her said children Caroline Ellen and James from your said Parish of South Petherton to the Parish of Kingsbury Episcopi aforesaid, and them deliver to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor or some or one of them there, together with this our order, or a true copy thereof.

AND you the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Kingsbury Episcopi aforesaid, are likewise hereby required in his Majesty's name, to receive and provide for them the said Charlotte PRIDDLE and her said children Caroline Ellen and James as Inhabitants of your said Parish of Kingsbury Episcopi until from thence they shall be discharged by due course of law. 

GIVEN under our Hands and Seals, the twenty-sixth day of July in the 12th Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady VICTORIA, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith, and in the Year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundred and forty eight.

The several examinations of Kezia PRIDDLE the wife of William PRIDDLE of the parish of Kingsbury Episcopi in the said county labourer and Charlotte PRIDDLE (the wife of Stephen PRIDDLE (now residing in the parish of South Petherton in the said county taken on oath before us two of her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said county upon a complaint made to us the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of the parish of South Petherton toreching? the place of the last legal settlement of the said Stephen PRIDDLE on the 26th day of July 1848 who severally say and first the said Kezia PRIDDLE on her oath saith

 

 I am the mother by my present husband William PRIDDLE of the said Stephen PRIDDLE who was born at West Lambrook in the parish of Kingsbury Episcopi aforesaid twenty six years ago on the third day of the month of May last past.  He always lived with us in the parish of Kingsbury Episcopi aforesaid until he was married to Charlotte his present wife about four years ago except for a period of   three weeks during which he resided with Mr. William SALISBURY at Park Farm in the parish of Haselbury Plunknelt and he continued to live in the said parish of Kingsbury Episcopi until about eleven months ago

The said Charlotte PRIDDLE on her oath saith

 

I am the wife of the said Stephen PRIDDLE to whom I was married at the Chapel at Middle Lambrook in the parish of Kingsbury Episcopi in the month of June one thousand and eight hundred and forty-four and by whom I have two children born since we were married namely Caroline now aged about three years and Ellen now aged about a year and a half and one named James born in the said parish of Kingsbury Episcopi before we were married and now about five years old and who has always lived with us – We came from the parish of Kingsbury to reside in the parish of South Petherton about seven weeks before last Christmas, and about thirteen weeks ago my husband deserted me and I have heard that he is residing in Wales.  I and my three children are now chargeable to the parish of South Petherton being allowed by the Yeovil Union eighteen pence in money and two loaves of bread every week and I and my children are the persons mentioned in the certificate of chargeability of the Board of Guardians of Yeovil Union now produced bearing date the 25th day of July 1848.  My husband has never gained a settlement since we were married

The BOARD OF GUARDIANS of the Poor of the YEOVIL UNION, do hereby certify, That on the eighth day of March 1848 – Charlotte PRIDDLE and her three children became chargeable to the Parish of South Petherton in the said Union.

In testimony whereof the Common Seal of the said Guardians is hereunto affixed at a Meeting of their Board this twenty fifth day of July 1848
