County of Somerset

The examination of Samuel Richards now residing at Hambridge within the parish of Curry Rivell in the county of Somerset Labourer as to the place of the last legal settlement of himself and his wife and six children taken on oath before us two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace? of and for the said county the 22 day of February 1843 who saith

I have heard and believe that I am nearly sixty years old and was born in the parish of High Ham in this county - About forty? five or forty? six years ago I went to live as a servant with Mr. Robert England at Burrow Farm in the parish of Kingsbury Epsicopi in the county of Somerset. I lived with him about fourteen years at yearly wages, which were increased from time to time, but I cannot recollect the amount in any one year. I lived the whole time in my Master's House who formed me all ? - When I left Mr England's service I took a small house in the same parish at five pounds a year and occupied it about two years. I then took a house and orchard at Lower Burrow in the same parish of Mr. Samuel Lye ? who reserved the apples at nine pounds a year. Soon after the death of Mr Lye I took the same house and orchard of the said Samuel Lye's Trustees for three years from Lady Day one thousand eight hundred and eighteen as the yearly rent of fifteen pounds and lived the whole time upon the premises and paid the rent of fifteen pounds for the year due at Lady Day one thousand eight hundred and nineteen to Mr Richard Tollen? of South Petherton the agent for the Trustees and the following years rent I paid to the said Samuel Lye's widow (now Mrs Hannah Manning) who was one of the Trustees, but the last year's rent was not paid, and the Trustees had the apples and grafs. I then went and resided at Middlemoor, a part of Westmoor and supposed to be in no parish, when I rented a house and orchard of Mary Louch at? the yearly rent of four pounds and ten shillings - after I had rented and lived in? the said house and orchard about fourteen or fifteen years. I purchased? the same at the price of fifty nine pounds and the same were conveyed to me. At the same time I purchased a small garden also part of Westmoor in the parish of Curry Rivell for six pounds nine shillings & nine pence - I afterwards sold the house and orchard for fifty pounds and the garden for thirty five pounds. About twenty years ago I was married to Mary my late wife as the said parish of Kingsbury Episcopi by whom I have six children now living with me in the parish of Curry Rivell and with myself chargeable to the same parish - Such children are Samuel now about fifteen years old Joseph now about thirteen? years old Caroline now about ten years old Robert now about nine years old Thomas now about five years old and Elizabeth now about one year and a half old.
