Mathew Allen, Sheriff to Wm. Wells

Whereas I, Mathew Allen, collector of the Taxes both State and Parish for the Parish of Livingston in the state of Louisiana for the year Eighteen hundred and forty five having seized and advertised according to law the following described property to wit:

Six hundred and forty acres of land lying on Ponchatoulas River in this Parish, bounded North by public land and South by Thomas McCabe�s land.

The above described property having been seized and advertised as the property of Samuel Leonard for the State and Parish taxes for the year Eighteen hundred and forty five and cost and I the said Collector having pursuant to notice given in said advertisement on the first Saturday in July Eighteen hundred and forty seven at 11 o clock a.m. offered the said before described land for sale to the highest bidder and after receiving the various bids adjudicated the same to William Wells he being the highest and last bidder for the sum of Thirty dollars and for the payment of which amount with legal interest twelve months after the date of sale, having taken Bond of said purchaser with good and sufficient security.

Now therefore Know all men by these presents that I, the said Collector of Taxes for the aforesaid year by virtue of the laws of the State of Louisiana in such case made and provided do sell and transfer the said before described property to the said William Wells his heirs and assigns and all the right and title which the said Samuel Leonard had in and to the said before described property to have and to hold the same to the said Wm. Wells his heirs and assigns forever reserving to the said owner of the land the privilege of redemption pursuant to the provisions of the law and retaining a special mortgage on the property until final payment.

In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name on this the third day of July Eighteen hundred and forty seven in presence of competent witnesses residing in the Parish of Livingston.

Be it Known that on this Twenty Second of December in the year of our Lord, one thousand Eight and fifty two & in the Seventy Seventh year of American Independence

Before me Gastin T. Raoul, Recorder of said Parish duly commissioned and sworn personally came and appeared Mr. George McMichael, who being duly sworn declared that he witnessed the foregoing act of conveyance from Mathew Allen to William Wells, that he signed the said act at the same time that it was signed by the said Allen, that he saw the said Allen sign the same & also saw the other witnesses J. H. McMichael whose signature appears to said act sign the same, that he recognizes all such signatures as genuine, that deponent believes they were all signed at the same time one immediately after the other.
