Sale of Slave, Eliza
Jeremiah Spiller to Samuel Richardson
06 April 1831

Be it remembered that on this Sixth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty one before me, Burlin Childress, Parish Judge and ex officio notary public in and for the Parish of St. Helena & State of Louisiana, personally came and appeared Samuel Richardson of the Parish and State aforesaid, who produced the following instrument of writing and requested the same to be admitted of record which is in the words and figures following (to wit):

Know all men by these presents that Jeremiah Spiller of the State of Louisiana and parish of St. Helena for and in consideration of the sum of three Hundred and thirty Dollars, the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge, has this day bargained and sold unto Samuel Richardson of the State & Parish aforesaid, a mulato [sic] girl slave for life named Eliza, aged Ten years, and I, the said Spiller, for myself, my heirs and assigns do grant, bargain, sell and convey to him, the said Richardson, his heirs and assigns, the said mulato [sic] girl slave Eliza, to their proper use and behoof, forever, and do warrant and defend to him the said Richardson, his heirs and assigns, the title of property in and to said slave against all claims whatever, & furthermore I do warrant the said girl Eliza clean of all defects contemplated by Laws.

Given under my hand this twenty sixth day of March one thousand Eight hundred and thirty one.

Personally before me, the undersigned Parish Judge in and for said parish, John Killian, who was present at the signing of the above instrument and saw the parties sign their names thereto and he also saw Thomas Kennedy sign as witness with the deponent.
