Sale of Land
Thomas Raiford to George Richardson
14 August 1839

Be it Known and Remembered that on this the Fourteenth day of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty nine,

Before me Thomas J. Davidson, Notary Public in and for the Parish of Livingston, State of Louisiana, duly commissioned and sworn, personally came and appeared Mr. Thomas Raiford of said Parish and State who declared that for and in consideration of the sum of One Hundred and Twenty four Dollars Cash in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, he does by these presents, grant, bargain, sell, convey, assign, set over and deliver with a perfect title, unto Mr. George Richardson also of this parish present, purchasing and accepting for himself, his heirs and assigns and acknowledging possession and delivery thereof,

A certain parcel of Land, being the west half of the North west quarter of Section No. Twenty five of Township Seven of Range Eight East as shown by the certificate No. 720 of the Reciever [sic] of the Land office at St. Helena, containing Eighty acres,

To have and to hold the said Land and property unto the said purchaser, his heirs & assigns to their proper use and behoof forever, and the said vendor for himself, his heirs & assigns, the said bargained property to the said purchaser, his heirs & assigns shall and will warrant, and forever defend against the lawful claims of all persons whomsoever by these presents.

Then came and intervening to this act Mrs. Elisabeth Coopper [sic] wife of said Thomas Raiford, who being herein duly authorised and assisted by her said husband was informed by me said Notary that according to the Laws of this State of Louisiana she has a legal Mortgage on all the property of her said Husband for the restitution of her dotal effects whether brought in marriage or subsequently acquired either by donation or otherwise, for the restitution of her paraphernal effects of which her said husband has had the administration or enjoyment and has alienated the same for debts by her contracted and to which she has made herself liable jointly with her said husband, and for Nuptial presents, upon which the said wife declared that wishing to give the purchaser a perfect title to the Land herein sold, she does hereby formally renounce and transfer all her said rights and Claims to the said purchaser his heirs and assigns on the property herein sold hereby binds herself, her heirs and at all times to acknowledge the validity of this sale and of the Renunciation she now makes on said property.

The said purchaser being satisfied that there is no lien nor Mortgage on the said property waives the production of the Certificate from the Recorder of Mortgages and exonerates me, the said Notary from all the responsibility for the non-production of the same.

Thus done and passed in the Parish and State aforesaid in presence of John Wells and William Wells competent witness who have hereunto signed their names with the parties and me said Notary on the day, Month & year first above written.

Wm. Wells, one of the witnesses to this sale not being able to write his name has made his mark.
