of the Bay of Quinte WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS FAMILY: Judging from early petitions, Dean was a common surname in Upper Canada from Niagara to Kingston. This study will focus on those Deans that are found in early Quinte records. Daniel M Dean and Isaac Dean were early pioneers to the area and there appear to be a few others. It is not known if they are closely related. My thanks to researchers Bonny Campbell and Olive Hoffman who have done a lot of the research and are willing to share their work on this page. I have added some details of the earliest petitions and there are many more later ones that likely would define children and relationships. The actual grants in the Land Books were not checked. | A Major Record The Newcastle District Assessment records below name the Dean heads of households (thus about 21 years or older) who have settled along the north shore of Lake Ontario over a 25 mile distance.

| Daniel M Dean Daniel M Dean does not petition for land as a loyalist and neither do his children so he can be considered an early settler. He appears in the record as early as 1802 in Murray and later in Sidney Township and his wife and children are named in the census data below. It is thought that the Daniel M Dean and Daniel Mathew Dean who later moved to Middlesex County are the same person. One of his children married a Perry who was an established early family in Sidney Township. BORN Daniel M. Dean, b. After talking over the whole situation with his family, he concluded that he would ask the old man Daniel Dean how he would like to exchange his tow-hundred acre farm, lot 22, concession 11, for the farm of two handled acres near St. Thomas. He said he would if the farm suited him. In a few days they went up to Southwold to see the see the farm, Mr. Dean taking his farmer with him. They were well pleased with the farm and country, five miles northwest from St. Thomas. When they came back they exchanged farms at once. Mr. Dean gave father fourteen head of two-year-old steers as difference between the two farms. Mr. Dean moved at once to Southwold and father moved on to the Dean place for a homestead. Isaac Dean Isaac Dean 1787 - 1853, was in Colonel Bleeker's Hasting Militia with his sons Jabez and Adam in 1834 in Shannonville. He was also in the 1818 Hastings Militia. He can then be found in the Hamilton Township assessments as Isaac Deen, Ben, Beens (all different combinations).In Hamilton Township, was an Adam Acker who also has about 4 spellings throughout those early assessments. His daughter Elizeran is the Eliza Ann Dean was born 1810 and married James Lake who is a witnesses of Isaac's will. A son of Adam Acker named Jacob with his wife Rebekah (buried in Hogle Cemetery) had relocated to Sidney Township as well as Jabez Smith Deen who is buried in Thomasburg Cemetery and also Adam Achre(Acker) Dean. York 5 Jul 1808, Noah Dean, of Hamilton, yeoman, that on Nov 1798 he purchased lot 25, 2 nd Concession of Hamilton Township from Aaroon Greely then of Haldimand containing 200 acres. He has built a dwelling, cleared 30 acres and lived there nine years with his family and now finds that Greely did not own the land in the first place and has since left the province. There is a book written about this family called the Dean Family of Hamilton Township. They seem to be related to the Taunton, Massachussetts Dean family and most of Cobourg was their land at one time. Most moved to Michigan and I believe Indiana. Allen. Huldah was quite a character. She out-lived three husbands. I believe her first husband might have been Canadian. Her second husband, William Allen, was 10 years her junior, but he died very young. According to a newspaper article from the late 1800's, Huldah was the first white women to cross the Mississippi by house ferry in 1832. I believe she met her last husband, Richard Freeborn, in Red Wing, Minnesota. His family, the Freeborns, were somewhat famous pioneers in the Minnesota area and county is named for them. Huldah was born in Canada and I think married for the first time in Canada to a man named Dudley. I think this because she had a daughter by her first marriage, who crossed the Mississippi to Iowa with her, named Emily M. Dudley. I do know that Gaius Dean was Huldah's father because there were records that my father had on Gaius' Revolutionary War exploits. Source: Information from Julie Clark. Three of Elizabeth Leavens siblings (Joseph, Benjamin and Catherine) settled in Prince Edward County and it is possible that the Dean's did as well. The above Daniel and Elizabeth had children named Daniel Dean and Mary (Polly) who married a Young. It is likely that the Daniel Dean named in the 1797 Nine Partner minutes is this same person and he would have travelled to Adolphustown to meet the settlers who wished to establish a meeting at Adolphustown. Maybe at this time he considered bringing his family to Canada. Bonny Campbell writes; "I emailed the individual doing Dutchess County Family Research Books and he stated that Daniel Dean that married Elizabeth Leavens died in 1830 in Dutchess County."
