(History of the Clearwater Kansas Community)

Oscar Baker (1854-1931) was born near Plattsburg, New York. He moved to Ottawa, Illinois at the age of 21 years. He married Helen Hammond (1861-1941) who was also born near Plattsburg, New York, but the couple never met until Helen went to Ottawa to visit friends. They where married August of 1883 and made their home near Ottawa until 1902 when they sold there farm and moved to Kansas -- coming to Clearwater where they purchased a farm northeast of town which is known now as the Boyer farm. They came to Kansas with their Illinois neighbors the W. J. Lucas's. The Lucas's bought the house east of town where Willard Parker now lives. After four years of farming, they moved to town and bought the butcher shop located in a two story wooden building that stood where Vern's Cleaners now stands. Clarence Baker helped his father in the butcher shop. The Bakers had two other children -- Charles and Gladys. The meat supplying the shop was killed and butchered at a slaughterhouse on the banks on the Ninnescah River south of town. Clarence left the meat market to learn telegraphy at the Santa Fe Depot under Roy Stanley. Mr. Baker couldn't run the shop alone, so he sold it and engaged in other occupations. Mr. Baker was a member of the city council for years and mayor for four years. At the time of his death, he was driving the mail truck between depots, having done this for many years. Clarence Baker later became depots agent, married a Topeka girl, and is now retired and living in California.
Charles Baker owned and operated a blacksmith shop here for years. As cars came into use, he changed to a garage. He married Hazel Cameron of Clearwater. They had one son. He remarried and had a daughter. They lived in California, but no word has been received from them in years. Gladys married Hollie Jones in 1922. They live in Clearwater. Their children: Jack, Joan (deceased) Jerri, Tommy, Bill and Betty. Jack and wife, Eunice, lived in Biloxi, Mississippi, with three children: Jack Jr. , Stanley and Cecile. Jerri lives with her husband, George Steffens, and their children: Janie, Melody, Robin, Denise and Georgia K. at Conway Springs. Tommy is at Joplin, Missouri attending Bible College. Betty and her husband, Gary Burkhart, live in Topeka. Bill is at home.
