Notes for Winifred Leona Woolsey:

The English surname Woolsey is of patronymic origin, deriving from the personal name of a

mother or father. In this instance the name can be traced to the popular medieval first name of

Wulsi, and the surname came to denote 'the son of Wulsi. This personal name was especially

popular in the country of Suffolk where it gave rise to the surname of Cardinal Wolsey. This

Cardinal served as Royal Almoner to King Henry VIII and was made Privy Councillor in 1511.

The modern structured system of hereditary name had not evolved at this stage, therefore

people adopted the first name of their father as their family name. This surname can occasionally

derive from a nickname origin, from a physical or personal characteristic of the original bearer.

The name can be traced to the Old English word 'wolflesey', which literally meant 'a wolf's eye.

Nicknames were common during the Middle Ages as there was a growing need to distinguish

those of similar personal names. One who was given this nickname was usually likened to a

wolf, a warrior or captain who finally succeeds in their long and valiant attempts and hard

enterprises. This symbolism went back to Roman times when the wolf was revered. The first

recorded instances of the name occur in Hundred Rolls of 1273; one William Wulsi and one

Robert Woolsee are registered therein.

Notes for WILLIAM STARKY HARRIS

Buried in Hackleman Cemetery. Obituary William Starkey Harris was born in Ohio on July 6,1849 and departed this life Dec.9, 1920.He was united in marriage to Emma Ice of Spencer Co. Oct. 2, 1879. 'To them were born 7 children- Samuel Francis, Mrs. Myrtle Smith, Mrs. Ella Hornback, Mrs. Lizzie Davis of this place and Mrs. Iva Fields of Indianapolis, Mrs. Sallie Hornback of Kentucky. Uncle Starkey, as be was called by many who knew him, was of an honorable, lovable character. His home came first, and it was the will of the Lord to permit him to live to see his children grow to maturity. Besides his children he leaves to mourn his loss a devoted wife, two brothers, two sisters, sixteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of friends. Uncle Starkey had been a sufferer for just a few days and everything that loving thoughtful ones could do was done for his comfort. Just a few minutes before his spirit passed away he made the remark, "I see God." Our hearts are made sad that so good a husband, father and neighbor is gone but we rejoice that his spirit has gone to his heavenly Father, there to live forever- Funeral services were held at Cross Roads Sat. p.m. at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev.Thom. Interment was in Hackleman Cemetery.

FOLLOWING INFORMATION FROM HISTORY FILE OF GEORGE JORIS WOOLSEY:

The following information was presented by Jimmy Woolsey of Oklahoma City, Ok.:

The following is excerpted from pg. 402, Vol. 7, of Acts & Moments:

"As yet, I know not what ship little George and his Uncle Benjamin Wolsey came to America on but this Isaac Allerton, an English merchant, who had come to America on the Mayflower in 1620, set up shop on Manhattan Island as soon as the West India Company took over in 1623. By having George, who could speak the Dutch language, great progress was made in his enterprise. The records do not have too much of George, tho(ugh) he was made manager of Isaac Allerton's business in 1659...

"The only presumption in the above is 'I believe George was escorted to America by his Uncle Benjamin Wolsey - who was a brother to George who died in Holland in 1629.' all the rest of the above is fact which can he proven. The Orphan's Court record in Rotterdam lets one know that George was not present at the time the record was made. Because he was in America. But the guestion is, did he come by himself or with someone? For the past 200 years and more most Family Genealogists have believed Benjamin Wolsey to be George's father. I too did believe this. But the more research I do the more I know this is not so. The fact that George did work for Isaac Allerton for 24 or 25 years make one wonder. Another fact is that Allerton and George, Sr., knew one another in Holland before the Mayflower made its famous voyage. Times were hard in Holland. Many children were sent to America to work out their ship passage for someone."

Notes for GEORGE SR WOOLSEY:

George Operated a tobacco shop in Holland. He had a brother, Benjamin Wolsey, who married Ovel Hook. For the past 200 years and more, most family genealogists have believed Benjamin Wolsey to be George Wolsey. However, the more James W. Woolsey researched the family ancestry the more he knew it not to be true and believed Benjamin and George to be brothers.

English translation of an original Dutch record reads:
