; Little is known of John Siple's early life. In 1840 he is listed in the NJ Census of that year in Frankford Township, Sussex County as the head of a household. His marriage to Harriet Cox on September 2, 1838 was in the Papakating Church near Deckertown (Sussex) in Wantage Township. About 1842, John, his wife, daughter Ellen, and mother-in-law Mary Roloson Cox emigrated to Delaware County, Ohio. They settled near Mary Roloson's older brothers Cornelius and Nathaniel Roloson in Berkshire Township. John worked as a blacksmith.

Sometime after 1849 John Siple and perhaps relatives and other Delaware County men went to California in search of gold. Family lore says that he traveled to California via ship and the Isthmus of Panama. John Siple is listed in the 1852 California census in && County, as a trader aged &&, from Ohio. Sometime during his time in California, he 'caught a fever' and nearly died. He wrote home for money with which to return and got back with nothing to show for the time but the trip.

Andrus Griffith, grandson of Rhoda Siple, John and Harriet second daughter, recalled about John Siple: 'the only story I ever hear about John Siple was that while in Ohio he had bought a derelict stage coach and put it in the yeard for his and the neighborhood children to play in. The coach was the most fabulous plaything!'

In late 1860, John Siple moved his family by train to Ashton, Lee County, Illinois. His oldest daughter Ellen, who had married Henry Jobe, remained behind. While in Ashton, John continued his profession as a blacksmith. He also purchased 160 acres near the border of Lee and Ogle counties.

The 1880 census lists John Siple as a blacksmith in Ashton with wife Harriet, son Lynn, and brother Nelson. The fate of Nelson is unknown but Harriet Siple died in 1881--she had a 'growth' in her throat so she could not swallow and stared--more likely dehydrated--to death. Harriet was buried with her mother in the Ashton Cemetery.

In the spring of 1883 a number of Ashton families, John Siple included, headed west to South Dakota by covered wagon in search of free farmland and a new start. The band of pioneers settled in Aurora County near White Lake, South Dakota. John Siple, sons Emmet and Lynn, and daughter Rhoda Andrus homesteaded on adjacent land. Rhoda and John Andrus remained in South Dakota until 1886 when they sold their land and moved back to Ashton. Lynn and father John Siple remained until 1889 and then went east as far as Larrabee, Cherokee County, Iowa. John Siple was living with his son and family when he died in 1895. Lynn Siple took John's body back to Ashton for burial in the Ashton Cemetery near his wife and mother-in-law.
