Census returns are not very helpful in this case. Henry may be the son of William and Mary TORBERT, born ca 1869 CA (c1880). He was not with William in 1900 and not otherwise located 1900, 1910, 1920. In 1930, he, age 61, born CA, is with wife Laura, age 57. She first married at age 21 and he at age 42. Thus, he might have married Emma 1910 and married Laura after a divorce. Emma is in the 1910 census index as Emma Torbert (c1910) and is alone in O'Neal township, San Joaquin County both 1920 and1930. In 1920, she is listed as married (c1920) but in 1930, as divorced (c1930). For some reason, Emma is listed three times in the death index under the names Dunlap, Dunlaptorbert, and Torbert (di). Perhaps whoever provided the information for the certificate was not that familiar with her, thus also the apparent error in birth year (cms).
