PAGE 1
There were relatively few Galloway families in early Oregon history. None are listed in the 1850 census. A story of one possible early Galloway is presented in Spencer Butte Pioneers by Lois Barton (1982), pages 19 and 20. Reportedly, a young Mr. Galloway was near Albany, Linn County, Oregon in 1851. He was frantically seeking a woman to marry to save part of a donation land claim. The one who related the original story understood Mr. Galloway was successful. However, the indexes to Oregon and Washington Donation Land Claims list only three: Charles and Thomas Galloway in Oregon and James A. Galloway in Washington. They had claims in Yamhill, Columbia, and Lewis Counties, respectively, and all three men were married before they came to Oregon. In addition, their arrivals in the area were later, from 1852 to 1854. Mrs. Barton indicates that she is unable to solve the mystery but wondered if it was the James Galloway who married Nancy Walker in Eugene, 1860. He is my great grandfather and I have his family bible. There is no indication in it that there was an earlier marriage. I have been unable to find any other indication that he was in Oregon before 1860. My grandmother stated that she understood he came across the plains on horseback in 1860. Unfortunately, I have not been unable to locate either him or his parents in the 1850 Federal Census. I think they were in Pennsylvania at that time since the 1860 Illinois census shows his parents with children born in Pennsylvania after 1850. Thus, I can contribute nothing about the 1851 Galloway incident but wonder if someone has the wrong surname.
By 1860, the census index lists only five Galloway individuals or families in Oregon and two more in Washington. However, several other families are probably present and, in some way, either missed by the census or by the census index.
The following is a summary of the information I have on all Galloway families reported in Oregon, Washington, and in Idaho to 1880. They are listed in alphabetic order of the pioneer, the first one in the family known to be in the area. However, when sons of a pioneer had donation land claims or are in separate households, they are listed separately.
When the entry for a child is preceded by a *, there is additional information about that person under that name in the following generation.
Some of the major sources used to compile this work are the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, Oregon, and 1870, 1880 Washington published Federal Census indices and census microfilms, 1880 Oregon and Washington census soundex, 1870 and 1880 published Idaho Federal Census, 1900 and 1920 California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington census soundex, Oregon State Death Index (only a few selected entries), Portland Newspaper index on microfiche, selected Portland newspapers on microfilm, Washington State Death Index on microfilm (sometimes very difficult to read), Social Security Death Index, and International Genealogical Index on microfiche and on computer. Information was obtained from the LDS Ancestry File on the computer but were not specifically cited here because permission to do so has not yet been requested.
Note that the page breaks here are not identical to those in the original. In most cases where a page break was in the middle of references, it was placed at the end in this version. This seemed appropriate since names in the references were not indexed.

? Galloway (1846-) of Wasco County, Oregon, 1880
.... A Galloway family is in Wasco County in the 1880 Oregon census but, unfortunately, there are no given names for either parent. He was born about 1846 and she about 1849, both in Missouri (1).

..Children
.....i. John GALLOWAY, born about 1871 Oregon (1).
.....ii James (Jas) GALLOWAY, born about 1873 Oregon (1).
.....iii Matilda GALLOWAY, born about 1874 Oregon (1).
.....iv Anna GALLOWAY, born about 1875 Oregon (1).
.....v Mary GALLOWAY, born about 1877 Oregon (1).
.....Comments: Since the oldest child was born about 1871 in Oregon but the family is not in the 1870 census for Oregon, they probably came here about 1871. There is no indication of any of them on other Pacific Northwest records available to the author except possibly the James, age 60, who died 17 June 1933? in Spokane City (2).

Amasa (1827-1911) or Chancey Galloway (1834-)
of Whitman and Ferry Counties, Washington 1880-1900
.... Chancey GALLOWAY (1) or A. GALLOWAY (2) or Amasa GALLOWAY (4) was born about 1834 in New York with parents also born there (1) or October 1827 in Michigan (2), apparently died 17 Jan 1911, interred Republic Cemetery Republic, Ferry County, Washington (cem). He married about 1865 (2)
.... Elizabeth (1,2,4) JORDEU (4) or JORDAN (di Charles), born about 1847 Illinois, parents also born there (1) or born February, 1846 Missouri (2). She is living with Charles in 1920 (c1920) see under Charles below).

.......... W. L. EWELL with witnesses A. and Elizabeth Galloway (4) .
Comments: Although the given name of the man in the two census records do not match and the birth dates and locations differ, the similarity in names of the wife and three children strongly suggest the two records are for the same family. Possibly the males are different and happened to have the same surname. The listed birth places of the oldest children indicate this family was in Oregon before 1870 but they were not located on the census index for that state. An Amasa Galloway reportedly settled section 5, Township 18 North, Range 19 East near Yakima in 1874 but no patent date was found (5). Possibly this is the same family listed in 1870 as A. Galloway (see above). There is also a marriage in King County, Washington November 1870 of M. S. Galloway and Elizabeth JORDAN (4).

Archibald Galloway (1820-1887)
of Coos County, Oregon in 1880
.... Archibald GALLOWAY, born about 1820, Scotland, parents born Scotland, appears in only the 1880 Oregon census (1) but the birthplaces for the children suggest the family was in Oregon in 1870. He is apparently the Archie Galloway who died in Marshfield, Oregon September 1887, age 67 (6). His wife is
.... Mary A., born about 1821, also Scotland (1).
... They have 6 children in 1880:
.....i James GALLOWAY, born December (3) 1854 (1,3) in Chili (1,10), South America (1,2,10), a logger in 1900 (3) apparently married but wife not listed or obvious in the Washington census. He might be the one in the Odd Fellows Home of California in Santa Clara, 1920 who arrived in the US 1854 and was naturalized 1875 (10). A James died about 31 July 1939 (7) and might be this individual.
.....ii Margaret GALLOWAY, born about 1864 in British Columbia (1).
...*.iii William GALLOWAY, born October 1867 (4) or about 1868 in Oregon (1,4,9), a coal miner (4).
.....iv Archibald GALLOWAY, born February 1872 (2) or about 1873, Oregon (1,8), a single coal miner in 1900 (2), living with his brother, William, in Cle Elum, Kittitas County, Washington in 1920 (8), possibly the one who died 16 April 1857 in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington (5).
.....v Isabella GALLOWAY, born about 1875, Oregon (1).
Comments: Possibly the family was on its way by ship to the Pacific Coast in 1854 when James was born in Chili in 1854 (1,3,10). By 1864, they apparently were in British Columbia (1) but returned to Oregon soon after. They were not located in the 1870 census index but had another child in 1872 reportedly born in Oregon (1).

.... William J. GALLOWAY, apparently the son of Archibald Galloway and Mary A. (1), was born October 1867 (2) or about 1868 (1,6) in Oregon (1,2,6), parents born Scotland (2). A William Thomas Galloway, age 60, died 9 July 1928? in Kittitas County, Washington (9) and would seem to be this individual except for the middle name. Also, a William J. Galloway died in Portland, Oregon, 28 July 1927 (10, this might be the date of a newspaper reporting an earlier death). He was married about 4 May 1889 apparently in Roslyn, Kittitas County, Washington to

Miles and Mary had donation land claim #1755 in Yamhill County, Oregon (8). Miles was born 1810/11 in Ireland (8) and apparently died between 1875 and 1880 (22). Children include at least Bridget McDONALD, baptized 9 November 1856 age 1 month, Ellen, born 23 May 1858, married 11 October 1881 Willis Dean SHAW (5), Agatha, born about 1860, Monica, born about 1862, Veronica, born about 1865 (22), married Nils Presto LIND, Portland (5), Theckla, born about 1866, Cebastia, born about 1872, and Ignacious, born about 1875 (22).

.....vi possibly H. M. Galloway (9).
Comments: A William Galloway was the first of this line to come to America from Scotland (14). His son, William, born in Virginia, was a planter and served in the Revolutionary War (14). Charles, the son of William (14), was born in Virginia and is said to have had a large plantation (18). However, the plantation may have belonged to William rather than Charles (CMS). Charles moved to Illinois, Missouri (14,15), and later to Iowa County (14), Wisconsin (14,15) where he lived at Mineral Point (?). A Charles Galoway is listed there in the 1850 census (13). Charles was a farmer but also worked in the lead mines in Wisconsin (14). He served in the Black Hawk War (14,15) under General Dodge (14). The family had 11 children in all (1,14,15) with 9 reaching maturity (14).

Eight children started the journey to Oregon in 1852 but one died of cholera shortly after the start (1,14). This apparently was a daughter (CMS from 15). Five sons and 3 daughters survived to about 1885 (15) and 3 sons and 3 daughters survived to about 1904 (14). The journey to Oregon took 7 months (14). Charles and his family arrived near Amity, Yamhill County, Oregon (1,4,14), in November 1852 (1,4) and settled on Salt Creek (14). They had donation land claim #4695 that was settled 17 April 1854 with Thomas Galloway supplied an affidavit regarding the claim (4). The identity and relationship of Thomas are unclear. Most probably it was Thomas Findley Galloway who had donation land claim #2558 in Columbia County. Charles is living with son William in Yamhill in 1880 (11) while his wife is with their daughter Marie McDONALD in Marion County (22). Charles had a sister who married Captain J. R. (14) WILEY who died of cholera on the Platte River while crossing the plains in 1852 (1,14). An E. WILLEY of Mineral Point Wisconsin is reported to have died 10 June 1852 and might be related in some way (23).

That would seem to refer to Judge William Galloway of Yamhill County but he is still alive at that time (CMS). Any connection between the two is unknown to the author.

...* 1 John E. (8) GALLOWAY, born about 1850 (2,3), 1851 (8), 1849 (8,9), or 1848 (4) Indiana (3,4), Tennessee (9), Missouri (9), or Oregon (2) (the latter probably an error in copying census, see Mary J. below), died 2/3 February or March 1909, Cowlitz County, Washington (15 #5).
.....ii Margaret (2), Margaret J. (8), or Jane (3) GALLOWAY, born 1 September 1855 (16) or about 1855 (8) or 1856 (2,3,9) Oregon (2,3,9), died 19 August 1907 (16) buried Catlin Cemetery, Kelso, Cowlitz County, Washington (16), married 24 September 1871, Cowlitz County, Washington Benjamin BARLOW (6,12), born 15 October 1840 (16) or August 1842 (18) Michigan, died 31 October 1919 (16), buried Catlin Cemetery (16), parents also born in Michigan (18). His parents may be George BARLOW, died Portland Oregon 18 June 1887 age 79 and Mary Ann, died about March 1864 (19). Apparently, they had 3 girls M. BARLOW, born August 1872 (14) or Mary L. BARLOW, b 21 July 1872, died 18 August 1893 (16), H. BARLOW, born about 1878 (14) or Hattie, born May 1880 (19), and Josephine M. BARLOW, born August 1892 (19) or Margaret J. BARLOW, born 22 December, 1892, died 3 March 1907 (16). The boys were E. BARLOW, born about 1880 (14), or Edward B. BARLOW born October 1881 (19) and B. (14)/Ben L. BARLOW, born July 1882 (19), and James BARLOW, born November 1893, all Washington (19). A Ben BARLOW and Margaret Galloway had an unnamed female child 9 Dec 1913 in Cowlitz Co WA (wbi). Obviously, some of the dates do not agree.
.....iii Mary J. (2) or Josephine (3) GALLOWAY, born about 1857 (3,11) or 1858 (2,9,11) Washington (3,9,11) or New York (2, probably an error in copying census since next entry is also NY CMS), married 4 May 1875 Cowlitz County, Washington, Adam CATLIN (6,12), born Illinois (11) 1842 or 1862 (11, possibly both dates in error CMS) and had James CATLIN born about 1876-7, Charles H. CATLIN, born about 1880, and Ernest CATLIN, born about 1884 (11).
...*.iv Leny/Lerry (3)/Leray (4)/Lee (5,16)/LeRoy (9,16)/Larry (9) GALLOWAY, born 21 October 1860 (16), October 1862 (5) or about 1861 (3,4,9,20), Washington (3,5,9,20) or Indiana (4), died 22 February 1948 (16,15) in Clark County, Washington (15 #1914).
Apparently unmarried in 1920 (20).
.....v Alice GALLOWAY, born August 1868 (17), Washington (3,4,9,17), married 26 May 1884 Cowlitz County, Washington, E. (6,12), Edmund (13) or Edward (16,17) L. BODINE (6,12), born April 1857 (17) Kentucky (13,17) parents New Jersey and Indiana (17), died 6 February 1929, buried Cowlitz View Memorial Garden (16), at least one child, Johny BODINE, born August 1890 Washington (17). An Everett E. BODINE, born about 1919, died 3 June 1928 buried Cowlitz View Memorial Garden might be their child (16).
Comments: They moved to Washington Territory 20 October, 1852 (8) and settled on the donation land claim 1 November 1853 or 1855 (8). The claim, #O-551, is in Lewis County, Sections 35 and 36, T 12N R 1W, 320.12 acres (8). Apparently the name and age of the husband in the 1870 census is incorrect since the same family is listed with a James as the head in the 1880 census with an age corresponding to the 1860 age and no other Richard in known from that area. Occupation is listed as both lumberman and farmer (9).

********** Second Generation **********
.... John E. GALLOWAY, son of James A. Galloway and Catherine (1,2,3), born November 1849, Indiana (5), died 2/3 February (oj) or March 1909, Cowlitz County, Washington (9 #5), married
.... Carrie E. MICHAELS in Cowlitz County, Washington, license #204 18 October 1882 (6). She seemed to prefer the name Clara E. or the license index is in error. Clara E. was born Oct. 1865 (5) or 1864 (11,12), in Washington (5,11,12) and probably the Clara K. Galloway who died 5 June 1917 Portland, OR (di). She is the Clara MICHAELS, daughter of Perry MICHAELS and Nancy FRAZIER (11,12).
..Children to 1900: 4 born, 3 alive (5).
.....i Cramer GALLOWAY, born August 1882 (5) or 1883-4 (4,13). A Cramer Galloway born 26 August 1883, died September 1970 in Columbia Co. Oregon (8) with wife Lola, born 25 Oct 1901, died 18 Mar 1986 Multnomah Co OR (di). In 1930, they had a son and a daughter (c1930). Cramer Jr. was born 11-1-1923 Rainier, OR or Kelso WA, mother names Mae, married and with 4 children, worked in Portland OR (k)
.....ii Catherine GALLOWAY, born October, 1884 (5) or 1885-6 (3)
.....iii Maggie GALLOWAY, born April 1887 (5). Apparently, Maggie is the Margaret A. who married Benjamin L. BARLOW (oj), born ca 1882 WA, and had Virginia B., born ca 1913 (c1920).
Comments: Clara/Carrie was not noted in the 1920 census for Oregon and Washington which suggests she may have remarried. A Kate GALLOWAY, born October 1885 (7) in the 1900 census may be another reference to Catherine. A Kate Galloway married a Charles AYERS in Cowlitz County, Washington with license #1223 issued 3 December 1903 (6). A Charles AYERS, born 10 April 1875, died 7 August 1946, is buried in Cowlitz View Memorial Garden, Cowlitz County, Washington (10). Charles and Catherine had a child 10 Jan 1910, Cowlitz Co WA (wbi). Also there is Clara M. AYERS, born 14 March 1880, died 31 March 1961 (10) who would seem to be his wife. If this is the same Charles that married Kate Galloway, the woman must be a later wife.

.... Lee (4,14) or LeRoy (3) or Lee Roy (14) GALLOWAY, also listed as Leny/Lerry (1), Leray (2) and Larry (3) GALLOWAY, son of James A. Galloway and Catherine (1,2,3), born October 1862 (4) or about 1861 (1, 2, 3), Washington (1,3,4,14) or Indiana (2), a fisherman (4), apparently married in Maryville, Cowlitz County, Washington 12 February 1891 (16)
.... Laura MICHAELS (5 #476), who seems to be the daughter of Perry MICHAELS, born 1828-32 Ohio and Nancy FRAZIER, born 1833-42 Missouri (11,12,13). Laura was born about 1874 (11,12,13) and apparently died before 1900 (4). A Laura D. Galloway is buried in the Oak Point Cemetery, born 1866, died 1928 but she would seem to be too old for this Laura and would be appropriate for the wife of Thomas C. GALLOWAY, born about 1862 North Carolina, who are in Seaside, Clatsop County, Oregon in 1920 (15).

...*.vii Charley or Charles Grant Gallaway, born 12 November 1875 (1) died 17 August 1960 Gresham Oregon, (11).
Comments: The family legend is that James rode to Oregon on horseback in 1860. However, it is certainly possible that he came earlier since he was in Eugene by the 1860 census and married that fall. Neither he or his parents could be located in the 1850 Pennsylvania census even though all families with the surname Galloway and similar spellings listed in the printed index were checked in the census microfilm. James and Nancy were married by Rev. Robert ROBE (2) who was married to the bride's sister. The family apparently resided in Eugene until after 1865 when their first child died there. A brother of Nancy, William Thomas WALKER and wife Ardelia ZUMWALT had donation land claim #2652 in Sec. 33 T18S R3W. They sold the NW 1/4 of Sec 33 to Nancy A. Galloway in a deed witnessed 18 April 1866. It seems strange that the property is sold to Nancy and not to both of them. The William Thomas WALKER property was next to their parents claim in Sec 3, 4, 9, and 10 of T19S R3W. By 1870, James and Nancy are near Brownsville and were south of Lebanon in 1880. He was a farmer.
.... Mary SILL married William McHARGUE in Linn County, Oregon 12 November 1871 (17). Unfortunately, there are two Williams in Linn County at the appropriate time. It is reported that she married the younger William, born 9 January, 1848, Linn County, Oregon to James McHARGUE and Sarah Ann MONTGOMERY (32). If so, he would have been age 23 and she 45. He died 28 February, 1875, in Palouse County, Washington (32). The older William was born in 1804, married 22 March 1832 Lucinda R. PROFFITT, arrived in Oregon 1853, and settled DLC 3058 OC (32). Lucinda died 21 May 1869 (32). A marriage over two years later to a woman 22 years younger does not seem unreasonable. The older William died 22 December 1875 and there seem to be no probate records for him. At this time, I know of no other evidence to distinguish the husband of Mary SILL. Susan C. SILL, ae 60 in 1895, of Wickoff KS is listed as a sister and inherited the estate of Mrs. Mary Galloway (6). A William SILL, born about 1822 Ohio, is at res. 264, Brownsville twp., Linn County, Oregon, d 75, sh 33, 414A of 1880 Federal Census possibly is a brother (CMS).
