Life of the Late Rev. J. T. Galloway Noted by Activity
The Rev. John T. Galloway, who died February 16 in his 89th year, resided for the past eight years preceding his death with his oldest son, M. E. Galloway, No. 233 East 82d street north.
He was born in Indiana November 20, 1839, and married in Kentucky in 1860 to Elizabeth Adams. Before the Civil War he served in the state malitia and then enlisted in the United States army for the first three months' call for volunteers issues by President Lincon.
In April 1863, he joined the company of his kinfolk on a wagon train to the West, and they had many exciting experiences and much hardship, finally arriving at La Grande November 15 of that same year. Within a fortnight he and his wife and a year-old baby were located on a homestead four miles north of La Grande. He worked in the shingle business, but the early the next spring went to the Willamette Valley, first locating near Silverton.
At various periods he lived near Dayton, in Buena Vista and Lewisville, and then for a period was in Eastern Oregon, finally settling near Heppner, where he engaged in farming and stock raising.
In 1888 he became an exhorter in the Methodist church, and later became an ordained minister. Feeling a call to the mission fields, he accepted opportunities open to him with the United Brethrern church and preached for many years, until death called his wife, January 12, 1912. He then gave up his ministerial work in Idaho and Washington and came to Portland to reside.

Pioneer Packer Succumbs on His 78th Birthday
Curcuit Judge is Brother
Town of Weiser, Idaho, was founded, first Hotel Established, Built First Sawmill and Carried Supplies to Gold Fields
Thomas C. Galloway, pioneer of Oregon and Idaho, died June 6 at his home in Weiser, Idaho, on his 78th birthday. Mr. Galloway was a native of Wisconsin, crossing the plains with his family in 1852 and settling in Yamhill County, near Amity. He took advantage of the imperfect facilities of acquiring an education while working on his father's farm. He learned the printer's trade in the Catholic Sentinel office, then under the supervision of J. S. McCormick, one of Portland's pioneer publishers and merchants. While in Portland, he attended the Portland Academy, conducted by Rev. Mr. Kingsley, an early Methodist missionary. In 1860-61 he taught school in Yamhill County. In the Spring of 1862 he took a pack train of 11 animals loaded with provisions to the Cariboo gold mines in British Columbia, walking the entire distance and driving his pack animals. There he sold out, receiving $1 a pound for his flour and bacon.
Judge Galloway Accompanied.
In March, 1863, he fitted out another pack train of 30 horses and mules, taking with him his younger brother, now Judge William Galloway, of Salem, as bellboy (cook and leader of the bell or kitchen horse). He took his pack train up the south side of the Columbia River and was ten days reaching The Dalles from Portland. At The Dalles, he loaded on his pack animals the machinery for the first sawmill erected in Idaho. This mill was erected in the summer of 1863 in the Boise Basin on Grimes Creek, by a man names Butler, from Portland and from this mill was furnished the first lumber for the Boise Basin placer mines. For several years Mr. Galloway ran the pack train and freight wagons, taking provisions and supplies to the Idaho gold fields, loading at The Dalles and Umatilla landings, the then two important shipping points on the Upper Columbia River.
House became hotel.
In 1864 Mr. Galloway pre-empted 160 acres of the Weiser River Valley and built the first house on the site of what is now Weiser, which house was used as a hotel and stage station. He furnished meals for all travelers who came by stage, on foot or pony express, but his visitors slept in their own blankets on the dirt floor. In 1865, he founded the city of Weiser and erected the first frame building, paying $40 a thousand for the rough lumber and hauling it 100 miles. He planted the first grain and took the first threshing machine into Weiser Valley. He built the first irrigation ditch which now fertilizes 10,000 acres of the finest land in Idaho.
Terms served in Legislature.
For the protection of the settlers and to put down outlawry he took a prominent part in the organizing the Idaho volunteers and was captain of the Home Company for several years. This organization did much to bring to Idaho a higher class of citizens.
Thomas C. Galloway served two terms in the Territorial, and also two terms in the State Legislature and held many other prominent positions in the educational and material advancement of the state. He served in the Indian wars of '78 and '79 as Captain of Volunteers.
In 1868 Mr. Galloway married Mary Flournoy, or Boise City, who survives him. Of the union there were nine children: Anna G. Dickenson, Mary G. Butterfield, Frances H., Katherine Flournoy, Charles, Guy and J. W., of Weiser, Idaho, and Thomas C. Jr., of San Francisco. He leaves 31 grandchildren, his own death being the first in the family. By his request his body was creamated at the Portland Crematorium on June 3, most of his family being present.
