Note: This file is being posted for the benefit of others interested in the Michael surname. A minimum of time was spent on rechecking the content. Please be understanding and forgive me for mistakes. If you e-mail me, I will try to check and correct them.
I hoped that a review of the land transactions involving Michaels, Kelsos and Shoemakes in Dearborn and Decatur Counties would clear up some of the relationships of younger Michaels to the older ones. Thus, the microfilm copies of the index volumes and many of the Deed Recording books were borrowed from the LDS library in Salt Lake City. The Dearborn County books appear to have been in a flood and apparently earlier records were lost in another flood. Each volume has both a grantor and grantee index and these were carefully checked for the surname Michael. They also were generally checked for the surnames Evans, Kelso, Smoemake, and for George Smith. Many were also checked for the surnames Bennett and Frazier. The Decatur County individual volumes did not contain indexes so they were checked mainly for Michael and Kelso entries which were obtained from the index volumes.
This material is arranged by county and than alphabetically by surname, given name, and range, township, and section. Note that township 7 of range 3W in Dearborn County is next to township 6 of range 2W. Also, Ripley County, just west of Bearborn County, is on another meridian line and range 13 E township 8 N is next to T 7 R 2W but offset about 3 miles to the north. Present Dearborn county political township boundaries do not follow survey townships in many places. I have a photocopy of this area at a scale of about 5/8 inch to the mile. We do not have a higher scale map, 2 1/2 inches to a mile, in our university map library.
In the individual designations below, the location is listed as section-township-range. Measurements are r for rods, l for links, p for perches, ac for acres. Land record book references are given in () as volume and page. Some of the deeds are apparently mortgages returning land to original owner unless certain payments are made. This may have been overlooked in some cases. I found it difficult to understand the deeds which were obviously related to a mortgage. Notes were made on a number of Frazier and some Evans deeds which are not listed here because there seemed to be no direct connection to the Michael surname. I can check my notes for those who have an interest in those surnames.
It is hoped that others will be helped by this summary. Any additions, suggestions, and corrections would be appreciated.
Most original land purchases were not found in the deed books. Dearborn County land entries are found in "Land Purchases from Ohio Pioneers" by Berry. Quarter sections were not listed in this source (1). Another listing from Compugens Systems (1992) covers all Indiana and does give a brief description (2). Both are combined below but some do not appear on both lists.

Conclusion
.... Missing land: I did not find the disposal of about 20 acres of Casper Michaels land in the NW1/4 7-6-2...About 80 acres of Jared Michaels land NE1/4 12-7-3 is not accounted for...It is possible that they did not buy all the land that the Compugen Systems list indicates...Tax lists would probably be needed to prove that point...I found no record on Daniel Michaels land SW1/4 NE1/4 9-6-2...Possibly it was disposed of at probate in another county or state... Again, tax lists might help...

.... I am a bit disturbed that there are some differences between the two government land lists...Jacob is not on one and a Philip is not on the other.
A second entry for Philip on one list and not the other may represent the purchase of the rest of the land that Compugen lists for him for the earlier date.
.... It seems significant that George Michael of Decatur County in 1827 buys land in Center twp. Clinton County...Jared Michael and his son-in-law, Jason Clark are in Clinton County in 1840 whereas they were in Decatur County in 1830...It would be interesting to know if they were on the land purchased by George...George does not seem to be there in 1840

It is not clear that John and Eli Michael are sons of the older Casper Michael but they probably are...Philip Michael is a witness to the Eli & John transfer and might be their brother...This is the John who married Dilemma Evans, daughter of John Evans, in 1830 and the Eli that married Catherine Evans in 1831

The Casper Michael who married Hester is probably the son of Philip and Mary...The Jasper who married Ruth may be the son of Philip...Ruth is probably Ruth Shoemake, daughter of Blackley and Nancy Shoemake and sister of Enoch, James, Blackley Jr. and possibly Drewry and John Shoemake...Mary Ann, wife of Ebenezer Dumont may also be her sister. If brother-sister Michael married sister-brother Shoemake, then Dedimiah Michael would be the daughter of Philip and Mary Michael...
