Fraser Family


Having searched for many years to locate my Scottish ancestors, I finally found a starting point with John FRASER marrying Elizabeth TORRIE (TORY-TORRANCE-TORIE) there seem to be many spellings of her surname. They were married on 25 Aug 1797 in Duffus Moray Scotland. So far have been able to find six children born to the marriage.


Second Generation.


John FRASER chr. 12 July 1798 in Duffus Moray.
*Alexander FRASER chr. 27 October 1801 in Auldearn Nairn Scotland.
Annie FRASER chr. 30 December 1803 in Auldearn Nairn Scotland.
Peter FRASER chr. 5 July 1806 in Auldearn Nairn Scotland.
Elizabeth FRASER chr. 3 Nov 1809 in Auldearn Nairn Scotland.
Margaret FRASER chr. 28 Nov 1812 in Auldearn Nairn Scotland.


Third Generation.


Alexander FRASER married Rebeccah MACLEAN on 20 May 1826 in Dyke Moray Scotland. Rebeccah is the daughter of Alexander MACLEAN and Rebecca FRASER, not sure when she was born. Alexander FRASER died on 8 Sep 1870 Duffus Moray Scotland and Rebeccah died on 13 Sep 1875 Duffus Moray Scotland. Have only found two daughters to this marriage.


Ann FRASER born 17 April 1827 in Forres Moray Scotland.
*Elizabeth FRASER born 1828 in Dyke Moray Scotland.



Fourth Generation.


Ann FRASER married William TESTER on 9 March 1848 in Elgin, Moray Scotland. William parents unknown so far. They had seven children.

Jane Eliza TESTER born 8 Feb 1852. Elgin Moray Scotland
Alexander TESTER born 15 June 1856 Elgin Moray Scotland. He may have died at a young age.
Elizabeth TESTER born 15 June 1856 Elgin Moray Scotland
Alexander and Elizabeth may have been twins.
Ann TESTER born 26 Jul 1858 Elgin Moray Scotland. She may have died at a young age.
Isabella TESTER born 16 June 1859 Elgin Moray Scotland.
Ann TESTER born 30 April 1861 Elgin Moray Scotland.
Alexander TESTER born 20 Apri 1863 Elgin Moray Scotland.

Elizabeth FRASER married George GILBERT, son of James GILBERT and Janet LYON, on 17 June 1857 at 930 High Street Elgin Scotland. Parish of the Free Church of Scotland. They had nine children.

Rebecca GILBERT born 21 Dec 1857 Banif Scotland.
James GILBERT born 18 Dec 1859 Saint Nicolas Aberdeen Scotland.
George GILBERT born 12 Sep 1861 Saint Nicolas Aberdeen Scotland.
Olivia GILBERT born 22 Dec 1863 Saint Nicolas Aberdeen Scotland, married STUART.
*Elizabeth GILBERT born 10 Mar 1866 Saint Nicolas Aberdeen Scotland.
Alexander Porterfield GILBERT born 6 Sep 1869 Saint Nicolas Scotland.
John GILBERT born 1875 Saint Nicolas Aberdeen Scotland.

Fifth Generation.


Elizabeth left Scotland on board the 'S.S.AUSTRALASIA', arriving in Sydney Australia on 21 August 1884. She was listed as a single 19 year old Presbyterian from Aberdeen who could read and write, with friends in Sydney. Her passage out on the ship cost two pounds. Elizabeth was my ggrandmother and it must have taken great courage to come from Scotland to Australia in those days to start a new life. While she was living in New Zealand, family lore says that her sister Olivia (STUART) visited but I can not find any record so far.
On the 7 June 1887 at Balmain Pyrmont Sydney Australia she married William Charles BETTERIDGE born Dec 1861 Hartshorne Derbyshire England, son of George BETTERIDGE and Hannah BARNEY.

They then moved to Bourke N.S.W. where most of their six children were born.
Charles BETTERIDGE born 18 July 1888 Bourke N.S.W. Australia, died 26 Feb 1889 Wanaaring Australia.
Henry BETTERIDGE born 7 Feb 1890 Bourke N.S.W. Australia.
Rose BETTERIDGE born 7 April 1892 Bourke N.S.W. Australia.
*Ellen BETTERIDGE born 12 June 1894 Bourke N.S.W. Australia.
Charles BETTERIDGE born 10 Nov 1896 Orange N.S.W. Australia
Elizabeth BETTERIDGE born 1898 - died 1899 N.S.W. Australia.


The family them moved to the mining town of Broken Hill South Australia, from there to Adelaide South Australia. It is believed they then caught a ship to Auckland New Zealand - name and details unknown - the family was next found in Huntly New Zealand where the children attended school. From there it was believed they went south to Rotorua before returning to north of Auckland to the farming community of Kaukapakapa.

Elizabeth passed away on 4 May 1925 and is buried in the Church cemetery at Kaukapakapa.

William remaried another Scots lass Jean Garrett NISBET from Gourock Scotland on 10 Mar 1928 St Andrews Presbyterian Church Henderson Auckland.

William passed away on 13 August 1943 at the Auckland Hospital, he is buried at Waikumete cemetery Auckland.


Sixth Generation.



Rose BETTERIDGE married 17 June 1920 John Butler Parnel CARRUTHERS born 28 Oct 1890 Wellington New Zealand, son of John Butler CARRUTHERS and Adelaide Elizabeth DANIEL. They had one child who is still alive.
Rose passed away 5 Mar 1981 at Masterton New Zealand.
John passed away 18 Feb 1973 at Masterton New Zealand.

Ellen BETTERIDGE married 16 April 1919 John (Jack) Charles COOPER born 26 Jan 1896 Kensington England, son of John Charles COOPER and Mary Anne WITHASON. They had two children, Pauline Francis Maie COOPER born 19 Sept 1922 in Ngongatoha Rotorua, passed away 27 April 2001 at Te Puke, cremated and placed in her parents grave in the Hamilton Lawn Cemetery, one other child still alive.
Ellen passed away 2 May 1945 Hamilton New Zealand, buried in the Hamilton Lawn cemetery.
John passed away 19 June 1965 Auckland Hospital, cremated and placed in the Hamilton Lawn cemetery.

Charles BETTERIDGE married Mary Irene in Auckland and had one child - still alive.
Charles passed away 28 May 1974 Foxton, New Zealand.
Mary Irene passed away 21 February 1988 Foxton, New Zealand
Both are buried in the Foxton Lawn Cemetery.
