Robert Wright Trenbath's obituary for 1904 says that he 'is proud of the fact that he is a cousin of the well-known Methodist minister, George Bowden, and is descended from John Wesley, on his mother's side'. George's mother was Ann, nee Wright. Robert's cousin Thos. m Mary Wright. One possibility is that they are both descended from the family of William Wright, who married Hetty Wesley, sister of John Wesley. From the census returns, it is assumed that George was born in Stockport in 1829/30 The BMD indexes show a marriage for a George Bowden at Stockport in SEP quarter of 1857 and also in MAR 1860. There is one in Reading for SEP 1855; one at Newcastle upon Tyne in SEP 1858; Exeter in SEP 1858; two in JUN 1849 at Clifton and at Portsea. Bowden was a common surname in Stockport at that time. St Mary's Church is situated in Stockport Market. Apparently no marriages are listed in IGI for any George Bowden and Ellen in CHS or DOR (where Ellen was born - but 1871 census gives DEVON). Further notes: If anyone knows where George was in 1851, I would like to hear! I couldn't find him in Barnsley when I last looked - or perhaps I couldn't get access to the microfiches.
