Jack TRENBATH, b. DEC 1896, , Chorlton, CHS, occupation Engineer'g student/2nd Lt, d. 8 Sep 1918, , , Flanders, France. He was an engineering student at Manchester University, studying engineering. He had the B.Com. from Salford Tech. Someone in the family said that he had been a private in the North Fusileers. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission says he was serving as a 2nd lieutenant in the 4th battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. I was told by the same person that he had just returned from officer training in England (as 2nd Lieutenant in this battalion) and was killed by a sniper's bullet the day after he returned to France. According to the m/f relating to medals at PRO, Kew, he went overseas on 3 FEB 1917. His army no in the Manchester Regiment was 276928 and he was a Corporal. He had been in service for 2 years when he was killed. Buried Nieppe, nr Armentieres at Pont D'Achelles Military Cemetary, plot 3, row 3, Grave 5. Nieppe is a village on the west side of the N24 road about 3.5 kilometres north-east of Armentieres. Pont-d'Achelles Military Cemetary is about 1 kilometre north-west of the village on the opposite side of the road. Administration of the will, which was proved on 18 March 1918, was granted to George Trenbath (his father), engineer. Effects £227.15.10. He was overseas for 10 months before his death. He was a good all-round man, reliable and 'will make an efficient officer' Reg no.=276925. Father is an engineer. BEF France. Commissioned to 4th battalion E Lancs. Joined the 11th E Lancs about 3 days before his death. The 2/7 Manchester Regiment is also mentioned.
