| ``In April of 1855, a group of Swiss immigrants travelled from a settlement in Illinois, across the Donner Pass to Napa Valley, and then on to Cloverdale. They eventually arrived in the Anderson Valley in November of the same year. Among these pioneers was John Gschwend, his wife Elizabeth, and their daughter Christine. Christine, who was born in 1857, is said to be the first white child to be born in the Anderson Valley. By 1865, they had established a general store, a post office, a lumber mill, a grist mill, and a brewery. They named this community "Christine".'' ``Charmed with its great beauty, and full of faith in regard to its climate, soil, and whatever else goes to make up happy homes, this pioneer pushed on into the very heart of the vale and there pitched his tent, about one mile west of the present site of Booneville. Here Mr. Anderson lived for a number of years, and had the pleasure and satisfaction of seeing the wisdom of his choice more than verified During the same year, 1852, Mr. J. D.
