Original 1822 document of my great great grandfather Daniel Gillies
The original indenture is three pages long, with the signatures at the bottom of each page. Most of the first page is shown here, the whole document is huge & too large to fit in my scanner. A section near the bottom part of page 3 is missing
Photo is of signatures from bottom of page three. Andrew Campbell, Schoolmaster in Newmilns was the brother of Johanna Campbell, wife of Thomas Gillies.

It is contracted Indented and agreed upon between John Morton, Weaver in Newmilns on the one part and John and Daniel Gillies, sons of Thomas Gillies, Labourer at Dalloy on the other part in manner and to the effect following that is to say John and Daniel Gillies of their own consent hereby become bound apprentices and servants to the said John Morton to serve him in the art and trade of a Weaver for the full term of three years from and after their entry thereto which is declared to have been upon the sixth day of May Eighteen hundred and twenty two During which period the said John and Daniel Gillies and Thomas Gillies as their Cautioneer and surety Bind and oblige themselves conly and seally that the said John and Daniel Gillies while in health shall faithfully and diligently serve and be just and true to the said John Morton in his forsaid vocation and shall carefully observe and perform his orders and instructions relative to his affairs and businefs to the utmost of their power and shall not do nor willingly suffer to be done by others any hurt injury

or damage to the said John Morton in his name goods or affairs and shall not only make known any designs which shall come to their knowledge tending to the damage or disadvantage of their said Master but prevent the same so far as they are able and shall not reveal any of their masters secrets nor absent themselves from their said service day or night unlawfully or without their masters consent but in all things as good and faithfull apprentices shall behave themselves to the said John Morton during said term of apprenticeship or if they do in the contrary they shall be bound and obliged to serve two hours after the expiry of said term of apprenticeship in the same manner in which they serve while it lasts for each hour they improperly absent themselves and pay two pennies for each penny of lofs their master may sustain or incur through their negligence or default in any manner of way for which causes and on the other part the said John Morton Binds and obliges himself to teach and instruct the said John and Daniel Gillies in the whole parts and branches of the businefs and vocation of a Weaver in so far as he knows and daily practices the

same and shall do his utmost endeavor to make his apprentices understand the same according to their genius and capacity and shall allow to his said apprentices the one half of all the money they gain or work for the one half of the candle necefsary for said work and do his endeavorer to furnish them regularly with work for the performance of all which on the part of the said John Morton Hugh Morton Junior Weaver in Newmilns Binds and Obliges himself his heirs and executors as cautioner for and conly and seally with the said John Morton in surest manner and lastly the parties hereunto Bind and oblige themselves their heirs and executors to fulfil and perform the promises to each other under the penalty.
