I'm certainly no expert, but there was a synagogue in Hanley in the late 19th century (my great-grandfather-in-law Rev. Philip Wolfers was a rabbi or Hebrew teacher there in 1893).  I imagined that it had disappeared, but my mother found a newspaper report of a wedding there a couple of years ago, and when I checked, I found that there was a contact name for the congregation in 'The Jewish Year Book'.  The latter says that the synagogue was established in 1873, and gives the (1999) membership as 30.
