The Midlands Derbyshire, Herefordshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Salop, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, The West Midlands and Worcestershire I'm certainly no expert, but there was a synagogue in Hanley in the late 19th century (my great-grandfather-in-law Rev. Philip Wolfers was a rabbi or Hebrew teacher there in 1893). I imagined that it had disappeared, but my mother found a newspaper report of a wedding there a couple of years ago, and when I checked, I found that there was a contact name for the congregation in 'The Jewish Year Book'. The latter says that the synagogue was established in 1873, and gives the (1999) membership as 30. (Submitted by Estelle Wolfers)
