Daniel S. Osburn Family

Daniel S. Osburn, the son of William and Sally Osburn, was born about 1821 in Gainsboro, Jackson County, Tennessee. About 1843, he married Mary or May Daws, her parents are unknown at this time, but it is believed that she was born about 1827 in Virginia, she and Daniel had two children before her death of scarfula in January of 1850 after their move to Union County, Illinois. Scrofula is tuberculosis of the lymph nodes and is a gradually degenerative disease identified by abscesses of the lymph nodes. (1850 Mortality census is the source for her death) Their children are

  • Silas Coleman Osburn, born 17 November 1844; died 16 April 1944;
    married 1. Elizabeth Ann Pool; 2. Julia Almeada Pool Black
  • Jefferson Osburn, born abt 1849; died between 1850-1860
Silas was born in Jackson County Tennessee, but Jefferson was born after the move to Illinois, his burial place is unknown. Silas told his granddaughter, Dollie Osburn Childress that he remembered their wagon crossing Missouri and a wagon wheel ran over one of the children. This may have been Jefferson, as there is no record of him after the 1850 census.

Mary/Mae's death left him with two small children, and on 31 March 1850, he married Mary Pauline Sheppard, the daughter of Elijah and Frances Rhodes Sheppard. Polly as she was known to family and friends was born about 1831 in Tennessee and died 11 November 1882 in Lick Creek, Union County, Illinois. (Pension file is the source for Polly's death date but I have not located her on the 1880 census) She and Daniel had these children

These children with the exception of David Elijah were born in Union County, Illinois, he was born in Shannon County, Missouri. Sometime after William and Sarah's birth Daniel loaded his wagons and the family moved moved to Missouri, finally settling in Shannon County, they did not stay too long because they are back in Union County by the time Harrison is born in November of 1862. The family moved again to neighboring Jackson County.

Daniel was a farmer for all of his life, but when war broke out, Daniel S. Osburn (Osborne) mustered into County I, 13th Regiment, Illinois Calvary on 12 Feb 1864 and died of pneumonia on 3 March 1864, 22 days after mustering in. He is buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Records online at Illinois State Archives tells us that when he enlisted the family was living in Makanda, Jackson County, Illinois, and that at age 40, he was 5' 11" tall, with light hair, blue eyes and of fair complexion. After his death, Mary "Polly" filed for a widows pension, and was adwarded August 15, 1864 a pension of $8.00 per month, commencing March 2, 1864, with an additional $2.00 a month per child for the following children, until they reached the age of 16, Mary H., Sarah S., Billy D., David E., Harrison B.
