Our Pendergrass Family

The background information the Pendergrass Family has been found on two different web pages. Larry Pendergraft's Pendergraft and Pendergrass Family Web Page is no longer available but visit Carolyn Collier's Pendergrass web page for more information on these families. These researchers have worked very hard gathering information on the Pendergrass family.

James Pendergrass was born about 1640 in Ireland and immigrated to Virginia about 1668/69. He died in 1718 in Virginia. James married Mary ??? who was born about 1640 in Ireland, she died 15 Sep 1715 in Virginia. (James' father might have been Phillip Pendergrass, he was the correct age and the only other of that surname in the area.) James and Mary's son Michael Pendergrass was born about 1664 in Ireland and married Rebecca Bolling in 1684 in Northumberland County, Virginia. Michael and Rebecca's son, John Pendergrass was born about 1685 in Northumberland County, Virginia, he died there on 20 Jul 1715. John married Anne Plesants in 1705. John and Anne's son Robert Pendergrass was born 8 Dec 1711 in Northumberland County, Virginia, he died in 1782 in Orange County, North Carolina. Robert married Elizabeth Manley, their son William Pendergrass was born 1730 (VA or NC), he died 1804 in Orange County, North Carolina. William married Martha Patti Titus in 1748. William and Martha's son David Pendergrass was born about 1751 in Orange County, North Carolina, he died 2 Nov 1804 in Chester District, South Carolina. He married in November 1777 in Hillsborough County, North Carolina Susannah ???, who was born about 1753 and died 22 Nov 1847 in Chester District, South Carolina. David and Susannah's children are:

Jane Pendergrass, the daughter of David and Susannah Pendergrass, was born September 1780 in South Carolina and died 29 Dec 1857 in Union County, South Carolina. She married John Mitchell about 1802 in Union County, South Carolina. Nonie Kenney, fellow descendant and reseacher of the Pendergrass and Mitchell families has shared her information with me and is found included below. Nonie's line is thru John Glover Mitchell. Letticia Mitchell, the daugther of John and Jane Pendergrass Mitchell, was born about 1810 in South Carolina. She married William Haney about 1839, their children are:

Henry Harrison Mitchell, the son of John and Jane Pendergrass Mitchell, was born 18 January 1814 in Chester District, South Carolina and died 5 January 1880. He married (1) Mary Parr 8 Dec 1835 in Union County, South Carolina and (2) Mary Ann Elizabeth Page 16 Jun 1850.

John Glover Mitchell, the son of John and Jane Pendergrass Mitchell, was born 19 Jul 1821 in Union County, South Carolina and died 14 March 1898 in Cherokee County, Alabama. He married (1) Elizabeth Nance about 1844 in Union County, South Carolina, the daughter of Thomas Nance. He married (2) Julia Ann Becknell, 25 Sep 1870 in Union County, South Carolina, the daughter of William and Mariah Ison Becknell.

John B. Mitchell, the son of John Glover and Julia Becknell Mitchell, was born about 1873 in Union County, South Carolina and died 1953 in Florida. Jessie Lorette Mitchell, the daughter of John and Susan Hallmark Mitchell, was born 11 Dec 1893 in Spring Garden, Cherokee County, Alabama and died 2 Jul 1986 in Nevada. She married Robert Christopher Chriss 17 Nov 1917, the son of Louis and Georgia Thomas Chriss. The children of Jessie Mitchell and Robert Chriss are:

Levi Franklin Mitchell, the son of John and Jane Pendergrass Mitchell, was born 19 August 1824 in Union County, South Carolina and died 1 Oct 1883 in Spring Garden, Cherokee County, Alabama. He married Eliza Jane Parr, 8 May 1845 in Union County, South Carolina, the daughter of John and Malinda Parr. The children of Levi Franklin and Eliza Jane Parr Mitchell are:

Elizabeth Lettice Mitchell, the daughter of Levi Franklin and Eliza Jane Parr Mitchell, was born 27 Dec 1847, probably in Union County, South Carolina, although her death certificate lists her place of birth as Spartanburg, South Carolina, she died 14 Jun 1936 in Trion, Chattooga County, Georgia. Elizabeth married Thomas H. Cornelius 9 Jan 1868 in Cherokee County, Alabama. Their children are:
