1. NATHANIEL¹ ALMOND¹ was born Bet. 1730 - 1732 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1789 in Wake Co., North Carolina. He married ALSEY COMADAY Bef. 1750. She was born Bet. 1730 - 1735.

Some have death place as Wake County, North Carolina.

Per Francis Allman Beaver, had land next to son richard in Northern Wake County, North Carolina in 1772/3 (old Orange County).

1810 Montgomery County, North Carolina census shows Nathan Almond 1 male over age 45, 1 female over age 45, page 4, #532.

Before Nathaniel, line was in Isle of Wight County, virginia.

According to the almon Branch Book in possession of Hudson Alexander, four of Nathaniel's brothers went to old Anson County (now Richmond). Several got invilved in the Regulator Movement, which ultimately became generally unpopular. Many involved left the area, some changing their names. There was a Matthew born June 16, 1782 in that area, the son of John Almond. One of Nathaniel's brothers was named John. Matthew moved to Indiana and is progenitor to the Almonds in Indiana & Iowa.

The book "Almon Branch seeking New frontiers" was self published by Eddie Almon Redmon-Hilliard and has 664 pages.

Per Debi Carlson, article on Allman family in the Buncombe County History book says Nathan Allman of Wake County had five sons - John Richard, Thomas, Nathan Jr., Edward and Martin.

Birth dates estimated. Served in the Revolutionary War for nine months around 1781 from Orange County, North Carolina. He was under the service of Captain Rodes and Colonel William Lytle. He was on Deep River three months and guarded the tories at Hillsborough, North Carolina for six months. Judy applied for his pension September 16, 1844 while living with her son, Nathan in Niangna County, Missouri.

The LDS website shows the children of William and Jane ALLMAN which agree with family records. However, the spelling is different - ALLMAN instead of ALLMON. I've found that there are several variants in the name including Allmon, Allman, Almand, Almond, Alman, Almon.

1860 Washington Twp, Webster Co., Missouri: William Almon 38 TN, Jane T. 34 TN, Nancy E 16 Missouri, Amanda 14 Missouri, John W. 12 Missouri, David C 10 Missouri, Mary 8 Missouri, Martha 6 Missouri, Jane 4 Missouri, Harriet 1 Missouri.

1870 Washington Twp, Webster Co., Missouri: Jane Almon 46 TN, Jane E. 14 Missouri, Harriet 12 Missouri, James L. 4 Missouri. I did not find William Allmon or his son David Calvin in the 1870 census. Living near Jane in 1870 are several Cowan's (Jane's family). Also nearby is William's sister-in-law, Charlotte, without her husband Thomas; and Thomas D. McCall 20 Missouri and wife Mary 18 Missouri, who is William & Jane's daughter; and William Spain 20 Missouri and wife Nancy E. 24 Missouri with their two children. Nancy E. is the daughter of William and Jane Allmon.

Between 1866 - 1870 five of William and Jane's children were married in Webster Co., Missouri: Amanda, Nancy E., John W., Mary, and Martha.

Two other children married in Macon Co., IL between 1871 and 1877: David C. and Jane E.

The two remaining children, Harriet and James Lee, were married in 1880 or after most likely in Texas since they are both on the 1880 Grayson Co., Texas census with their mother who says she is a widow.

I believe that William died sometime after May 1865 because his son, James Lee, was born Feb. 1866. William is mentioned in his father's will on which the final filing date was 28 Jun 1864. Freddie Dickey, niece of Edwin Basinger, found in the Carlsbad, NM Library a reference to a probate case of a "Willie" Allmon, dated 10 May 1866, Springfield, Missouri, Newspaper Abstracts 1865-1875 [Missouri Weekly Patriot]. These abstracts & indexes were donated to the Ozarks Genea. Society by a William Kearney Hall, MD. She ordered the microfiche from the Morman Church & found the same reference. She & Yvonne Perkins both wrote to Webster Co. & they do not have the records. Yvonne says that she also wrote to the state of Missouri & was told that there is a gap in Webster Co. Probate from 1863-67. No luck. So, we may never know exactly when William Allmon died.

I found a William Allman listed in the personal property taxpayers of Macon Co., IL in 1865 in Long Creek Township.

Notes for JANE T. COWAN:

According to family records Jane's siblings were: James, Peggy, Betsy, Jimmy and Dave.

1870 Census Webster Co., Missouri (with Jane E., Harriet & James Lee). Assumed to be widowed.

Because Jane is in Missouri with daughter Jane E. in 1870 and Jane E. married James Roberts in 1877 in Macon Co., IL, I believe that David Calvin went first to Macon Co., IL and that Jane and the younger children followed sometime later. By 1878 they are in Grayson Co., Texas.

1880 Grayson Co., Texas: Miser W. 26 PA, H.L. 22 wife Missouri, J.L. Allmon 14 brother in law Missouri, Jane Allmon 57 widow mother in law TN.

Jane T. Cowan Allmon is said to have died in 1889 in Tioga, Texas. I went to the cemetary there in Dec. 2000 and did not find a tombstone. There were several Cowan's buried there.

Graves for letters of Guardianship of Wm Myers, Mahala E. Myers, Lavina Myers, Eliza J. Myers, Samuel Myers and John Myers for the following reason..1st applicant does not state whether heirs has any estate of note, 2nd does not show the residence of applicant, and does not pray for the appointment of any person and that the notice required by law has not been given and that William, Mahala J. and Elizabeth J. is over the age of 14 years, and has the right to choose their Guardian that a part of said minors...reside in Parker County. He asks that Graves application be dismissed and that said Jas. Allman be Guardian of their person and property of Levina E., Samuel and John Myers.

Bond of william Graves who has been appointed guardian of the person and estate of Vina, Samuel,John and Eliza Myers, infant heirs of J. Myers, dec'd $300. Sureties: B. G. Lawrence and Absalom Cruse. Approved May 30, 1868.

At May term 1868 guardianship of the person and property of Vina, Samuel and John Myers was granted to W. S. Graves. Letters issued April 1, 1869.

Citation issued January 4, 1871 to W. S. Graves, Guardian of Joseph (sic) Myers, to appear at March term to render his annual account. Citation returned by T. B. James, Sheriff, unexecuted. "Deft is not to be found in my County. March 1, 1971".

Note from Bridgie Pierce:

Grandmother Eliza Pierce raised Dan Pruitt's wife, Maude Houston (daughter of Thomas Houston and Mary Ann Allman), after her mother died. She was not fond of Richard (Dick) Pruitt when Maude started seeing him because she thought he drank too much. Once when he came to see Maude, Grandmother Eliza threw hot water on him. they were eventually married anyway. Grandmother Pierce made really good light bread. Levi Pierce built Wesley Newman's house. Grandmother Pierce stayed with them there.

From the Lawton Constitution, Sunday April 5, 1925, Mrs Eliza Pierce passed away Saturday morning as a result of burns.

Mrs Eliza Pierce of Faxon met with a horrible death qwhen her dress caught fie from a stove whle she was burning paper Friday evening. Acording to meager reports, Mrs. Pierce was burning paper in the burner when her clothing in some manner caught fire and before assistance could reach her, her body was enveloped in flames, the flesh was practically cooked in places, altho rs Pierce lived until seven o'clock Saturday morning. Mrs. Pierce had reached the ripe old age of 89 years, and for her to meet such a tragic death at her age seems more than sad. A little boy is said to have been in the home with her. No detailed information could be obtained.

A. Pierce, a son of Cyril, Oklahoma, was passing through Lawton Saturday enroute to Faxon and while here, made arrangements with the St. Clair Undertaking Company for the funeral. He did not know the exact particulars of the death of his mother.

Mrs. Pierce is survived by six sons: J.C. of Faxon; A. Pierce of Cyril; W.M. of Altus; Bud of Duncan; Tom of Pauls Valley; Charles of Royal, OK. One daughter also survives, living at St. Jo, Texas.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Baptist Church and buriel will be made in the Faxon Cemetery. Mrs. Pierce was a splendid Christian woman and had been a member of the Baptist Church for sixty years.

Nancy Lucretia Houston and Jeff Davis Houston are probably the children of Thomas Houston by another wife since the 1880 Cooke County census states that their mother was born in Tennessee, while all the other children states that their mothers were born in Missouri.

At least one other child was born to this family. Maudie M. Houston was the mother of Dan Pruitt of Duncan, Oklahoma. He told me (Muriel Wilson) we were related. When I (Muriel Wilson) asked my aunt Minnie Neal if this was true, she told me: Maudie's mother, Mary Jane, died when Maudie was a baby and Mary Jane's sister, Eliza Pierce raised Maudie. According to census records, she was born about 1883. See Maudie's sheet for census records.

Notes for AMANDA M. ALLMON:

I don't know exactly when Amanda's first husband, John, died but they were only married a few years. Their son William was born in 1868 and in Nov. 1870 she married Reese B. Harkrider. She and Reese were married less than five years when he died in 1875 leaving her pregnant and with two small daughters. It appears that her third child by Reese, Hattie C., died before 1880. I've not yet located Amanda beyond 1880 and don't know if she remarried again nor when she died.

It shows all three children born in IL with their fathers born in IL and mother born in Missouri. Not positive that this can be relied on to say that John Wheeler was born in IL but there were Wheelers living near Reece Harkrider in 1860 in Macon Co., IL.

According to a posting on Harkrider Family Genealogy Forum www.genforum.com/harkrider, Reece Harkrider was listed in the McMinn, TN 1850 printed census as "Isaac Herkimer". The listing is Isaac Herkimer 29 Virginia, Mahala 28 Tenn, John 8 Tenn, Malilda 15 Tenn.

The Harkrider family moved to Macon Co., IL ca 1855.

They are found in the 1860 census for Macon Co., IL, Oakley Post Office, listed as Rees Harkrider 38 Virginia, Mahala 37 TN, John 17 Alba, Matilda 11 TN, Francis E. 8 TN, Jessie M. 2 IL, James H. 6 IL. They were living near several Wheeler families and that is probably how Reese met Amanda Allmon Wheeler whom he later married in Macon Co., IL after both their spouses died.

1865 and 1866-Personal Property Taxpayers of Macon Co., IL, R.B. Harkrider, Long Creek Township

31 March 1868-Rees B. Harkrider purchased 40.00 acres at $15.00 per acres for a total price of $600.00 in Macon County, IL. Legal description: north west quarter of the south west quarter section 12, range 3E of the third principal meridian, township 16N. Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database vol 791 page 410.

In 1870 census they are in Long Creek Township, Macon Co., IL listed as Rice Harkrider 40 Virginia, Matilda 21 TN, Francis 17 TN, Martha 10 IL. Also living with them is Savina Miser 18 IL. Mahala has aparently died by 1870. Amanda Allmon Harkrider's sister, Harriet, later married a W. Miser in Texas.

16 Oct. 1875-A petition for letters of administration was filed by A.M. Harkrider, his widow, stating that R.B. Harkrider died 6th day of October A.D. 1875. It listed his children as John M., Francis E., Matilda C., Martha A., Ida and Ella Harkrider.

Reeses' personal estate was appraised at $1,373.05 which included livestock, farm equipment and 24 acres of corn. The value of personal property taken by the widow was $579.05 and the remainder of the estate was sold for $790.54. From those funds various items were paid out to administer the estate including $30 for a coffin. In the final settlement Amanda received $339.95 with another $82.38 being paid to the administrators as a 6% commission. I assume that was paid to David C. Allmon and Amanda M. Harkrider. "The administrators represent that they have paid the first, second, third, fourth and fifth class claims in full; that all seventh class claims were prorated at fifty-four & 39/100 cents on the dollar."

The value of real estate was listed as $1400.00 being "the north west quarter of the south west quarter section twelve township sixteen range three east of the third principal meridian".

18 Dec. 1877-Proof of Notice for Final Settlement of Estate of Reese B. Harkrider was filed. It lists Frances E. Allmon, Matilda C. Moody, Martha A. Harkrider, John W. Harkrider, and Amanda M. Harkrider guardian of Ida Harkrider, Ella Harkrider and Hattie C. Harkrider. Administrators were David C. Allmon and Amanda M. Harkrider.

She is also listed in the final settlement of the estate of Reese B. Harkrider dated 18 Nov. 1877 -

"...David C. Allmon being first duly sworn deposes and says that he served the within notice, by copy, on Francis E. Allmon, Matilda C. Moody, Martha A. Harkrider, John M. Harkrider and Amanda M. Harkrider guardian of Ida Harkrider, Ella Harkrider and Hattie C. Harkrider..."

Since Ella was listed as Reese's child in 1875 and 1877 and Delia was not listed, I am assuming that they are the same child, born between June 1875 and Oct 1875; and that Hatttie C. was his daughter born after he died in Oct 1875.

Since Hattie C is listed as Reese's heir in 1877 but not in 1875, I am assuming that she was born after he died in Oct 1875 and was his daughter. She does not appear in 1880 with Amanda, so I assume she died before then. This may later prove to be incorrect.

According to Yvonne S. Perkins: My records show that David Allmon [with the Amos Wheeler family] is listed on page 495, line 23, Macon Co. IL census of 1870.

I looked at the 1870 census for Macon Co. IL p. 495 and it is extremely hard to read. My interpretation of what appears on lines 22-26 is as follows: Line 22-Wheeler, Amanda fw Farmer ? 200 Illinois

Line 23-Almon, David mw Keeping House 3250 250 Missouri male over 21 yrs

Line 24 ? Possibly David or Albert mw Farm Labor Pennsylvania

I feel fairly certain that the first person in the household was Amanda because I could read the F(emale). I could read all the names of states where born and the person's occupation. And the column showing male over 21yrs of age. Line 23 with David Almon was very hard to read but I believe it

was him and it definately said "keeping house".

The David C. Allmon Family

David Calvin Allmon was born February 25, 1849, in Webster County, Missouri, near Springfield. He grew up there and when he was a young man his family moved to Macon County, Illinois, near Decatur. His widowed sister married Reece Harkrider. When Dave found she had three pretty step daughters he became a frequent guest in his sister's home. On August 6, 1871, he and Frances Elizabeth (France) Harkrider were married. They lived near by for about seven years and three sons were born to them. They were Bert, Will and Ed. About 1878 they moved to Grayson County, 'Texas, near Tioga. I don't know the reason for this move, but his brother, Lee, His mother, Jane Cowan Al1mon, and sisters, Martha, Mary, Jane and Harriet, and France's sister, Alice, all came to Texas. There three more children were born-Hattie, Emmett and Charlie. In about 1889 Dave's mother died and was buried at Tioga.

As a little boy Emmett was sick most of the time. They didn't know in these days, but he was probably allergic to everything there. They decided to move to the Staked Plains to see if that would help him. Dave made a prospecting trip to Floyd County in 1891 and filed on a section on the west line of the county. Later he came and dug a well and built a half-dugout. In November of that year he got here with his family and all of his possessions. They brought some cattle but no hogs, so they ate beef for several years. His brother Lee, and sisters, Jane and Martha, and their families came, too. In a few years the sisters moved on, but Dave and Lee stayed. .And sure enough the little boy got all right and lived to be an old man.

In the early days they were ranchers but as more land could be broke out they preferred farming. In 1901 Uncle Dave sold the section he had filed on and bought other land a little bit southeast of there. He wanted his sons to have farm) too.

Uncle Dave had a big helping hand, but one time things backfired. A man with his family was passing through in a covered wagon and asked if they could camp in his pasture near a windmill close to what is now the Allmon school. He told them that would be all right, and they stayed there several months. He finally asked them to move on and the man told him no-that was his land because he had squatters rights. They went to court and Uncle Dave had to buy his land again.

In 1809 Miss Ethel Harry came to teach the school at Allmon. She had been teaching in East Texas for $20 a month and came to the Plains to get rich with a $50 salary. She and Charlie "took a liking" to each other and were married December 25, 1910, at her home near Qui tman Wood County Texas.

After Uncle Dave's death ,May 8, 1915, his son, Charlie took over the farm and operated it until his death, May 5, 1940. Then another generation, his son, Bill, was the farmer. On October 7, l944 Bill was married to Dora Copeland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Copeland, pioneer settlers of Lockney. On January 16, 1974 Bill died and his son, Chuck and wife Judy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen W. Gover of Earth, T'exas, carries on in the same tradition .They have a two year old daughter, Kacee Beth. Will the next generation to fanrl the land be a girl? Who knows.

My greatest admiration goes to all of the pioneers. I am glad to have shared the stories of the hard times and the happy times.

1900 Floyd Co., Texas census states married 2 years which would put marriage date at 1898. I have a photo dated Dec. 24, 1946. Written on the back it states that this was their golden wedding day. That would put their marriage date at Dec. 24, 1896.

In 1910 William Reece and Etta were living in Floyd Co., Texas. Her uncle, Nathan P. Gregg age 52, was living with them. Says they've been married 13 years. This seems to confirm the Dec. 1896 wedding date.

On the 7th day of Jul he was at Camp at Miami, FL and from May to Nov was listed as having the measles. Apparently reinlisted 27 Jan 1902, at Ft. Santiago, Manila, P.

1891 Old Settlers. The Allmon School District and Voting Precinct were

named after her parents. She was much loved and respected by the

" John Singleton Cash was the eldest of seven children, five boys

and two girls, born to Milton Guy Cash and Gabriella Campbell.

When John was in his teens the family moved to Floyd County, Texas

where John, as he grew older, worked as a cowboy. After his marriage

to Hattie Alice Allmon in 1902, John continued as a cow puncher and

for the next five years they lived on various ranches in Kent County,

Spur, Dickens, Abilene and Big Spring. During this time John and

Hattie had their first two children, Audra Alice in 1903 and Floyd

Clifton in 1905.

In 1907, tiring of life on the range, John moved his family to

Westbrook, Texas where he went into the real estate business with two

partners, Clark and Andrews. Shortly after, during a trip to Mexico

on a real estate venture, John became involved with Pancho Villa, a

Mexican bandit and guerilla fighter who was to be considered a hero to

the Mexican people for his actions in the Revolution of 1910. From

late 1907 and 1908 John was reportedly helping to obtain guns for

Pancho Villa's movement toward the Revolution and was away from his

family much of the time only seeing them for short periods. At some

point during this time it is known that John was imprisoned in Mexico

and released only after his family relinquished an undetermined amount

of money to the government of then dictator Porfirio Diaz. History

records that Villa was captured by Diaz in 1909, this seems to

coincide with the time of John's capture.

Meanwhile, Hattie and the children returned to live with her

parents, who had moved to Petersburg, Texas. John returned and in

August of 1910 their third child, Frances Elizabeth, was born. In

1911 John borrowed a covered wagon and moved his family again. This

time to Post Texas, a small town owned by C.W. Post of Battle Creek,

Michigan-Home of Post Toasties.

John went to work for the Double U Company selling "Post Home

Farms" on the caprock of Texas. Among the first to buy farms were his

father and three of his brothers, Bert, Cloyd and Guy. John, always a

handsome man with a knack for dressing well (his trademark was a large

white cowboy hat) had an outgoing personality and prospered in the

business. In 1914 when local sales slowed, the company sent John, Dr.

A.R. Ponton and another agent to South America to buy land. This was

at the time when construction on the Panama Canal had just been

completed. John was among the first to pass through the canal. He

made two trips - one lasting three months, and returned home each time

with gifts for the family and lots of interesting stories about the

people in south America.

In 1917 when World War I began, John told his family he wanted to

go into service and left his family again with the Allmons. A short

time later Hattie received a letter from him postmarked Amarillo,

Texas. She never divulged the contents of the letter and John never

returned.

It was later learned that John spent some time around 1919 again

as a sympathizer in the cause of Pancho Villa, who in 1920 was retired

by the Mexican government as a general. Some time later it was

learned that John was working in a shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia."

The family story was that John died in Eugene, Oregon in 1946. However when I got a copy of the death certificate, it was not "our" John Cash. I am still searching for data on his death.

BIOGRAPHY

Edward was a portly fun loving man. He enjoyed his family, eating

watermelons, and fishing.

In 1941 Edward bought his first truck and began the business that

he loved, hauling fruits and vegetables. His first trip was to

Falfurrias, Texas for a load of watermelons. He made $500 and he and

Frances thought they were rich. In 1947 he bought a fruit stand on

the highway outside of Floydada. It was very small, but he had a good

business and in just a year he had made enough money to buy a larger

fruit stand downtown. That was when people still went to town on

Saturday afternoons and sat around the courthouse square in their cars

and visited with everyone that walked by. By 1950, he had done so

well with the business that he built his own building about one half

of a block from where he was located. Then he started hauling from

Colorado, as well as New Mexico and all parts of Texas (Harrison,

1-2).

Edward and Frances lived in Floydada, Texas and ran their fruit

stand until the early seventies when they decided to retire to South

Texas. They sold the store and moved to Aransas Pass, Texas near

their two daughters, Dorothy Chambers and Carol Harrison.

On January 5, 1975 they celebrated their fiftieth wedding

anniversary, attended by sons and daughters, with a reception at the

home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Harrison

in Ingleside, Texas.

Eddie died the following year. He was greatly loved by his family
