Our Genealogy Research

Return to RAGFAM.NET

Updated August 3, 2009

Genealogy was always an interest of ours. We wanted to know where our grandparents and great-grandparents were from. We questioned our parents and they gave us the best answers they could.

We began our genealogy research in earnest about 1973. We started writing down members of the family trees. That's before personal computers were standard in nearly all households. So we did the best we could by documenting most of the information. It was not until 1986 that we got our hands on a copy of the Personal Ancestral File software.  A couple years later Gail and I attended a genealogy seminar in Dallas. This is what really opened our eyes up to how to research, where to research, and how to document our findings. Since then Family Tree Maker has become the standard genealogy software at our household.

Shores Genealogy

The Shores family was from Wilkinson County, Georgia. Alexander Shores (b. 1814) was said to be born there, married Sarah Ann Matthews. They had the following children:

  • Mary Ann Margaret Doldren Shores
  • Charity Elizabeth Shores
  • William Greenberry Shores
  • Sara Jane Shores
  • James Austin Shores
  • Martha Ann Shores
  • Lemuel Alexander Shores

Alexander and Sarah moved to Terrell County, Georgia early during their marriage. Several of their children were born on the farm near Bronwood, Georgia. Sarah died in 1881 and Alexander moved back to Wilkinson County. He most likely lived with his daughter Mary Alice McDowell in the town of Gordon. Mary Alice Shores had married John McDowell. They had a farm near the town of Gordon. Alexander died in 1899 in Ivy, Georgia. It is believed he was bured at the Hickman Cemetery north of Gordon, GA

Rick remembers visiting his great-grandfather, James Austin Shores, in Lakeland, Florida when Rick was about 7 years old. But, much of the Shores family genealogy can be credited to Ira Valentine. In 1960 Ira retired from the military and devoted much of his time to documenting family genealogy. He used family group records forms as he collected information. He visited family members, asking questions, copying family history from bibles, and touring cemeteries. He made visits to genealogy libraries searching census records on microfiche to find family members. He also visited court houses in Georgia search for records. All this was well documented in his family group records. He provided copies of his family group records to as many family members as he could. I visited  Ira Valentine and his wife Louise in May 2009. Ira still has a viable interest in genealogy.
