HISTORY OF THE CROWSON FAMILY

The following is a summary of what I believe to be correct about the early Crowson family.  I am always open to changes, so please let me know if you find errors or additions - with the documentation you have used.  For those of you who are just beginning your Crowson research, this history is not meant to be a primary source for your data.  Hopefully, it will be of interest and a good starting point.

Robert Crowson, or Crowdson, first arrived in America about 1686.  He sailed from England and settled in Accomack Co., Virginia.  Robert had two sons, William and Thomas.  Nothing is known of Thomas after he was apprenticed in 1702 to Sarah Coe, widow of Timothy Coe, of Accomack Co.  It is also not known when or where Robert died.  His son, William Crowson, was also apprenticed in 1702 to John Evans of Accomack Co.  In 1715, William married Comfort Littleton.   They had six daughters and three sons:   Betty, Comfort, Hester, Margaret, Sinah, William, John, Charles and one daughter whose name is unknown.  It is John from whom my family descends.

This article refers to John's son, William, born 1750 in Johnston Co., North Carolina. He married Mary Thomas 1769 in Jones Co., North Carolina. Their children were: Richard, Aaron, Moses, Mary Elizabeth, William, John, Jacob, Abraham, Isaac, Thomas B., Jonathan and Jane.

"The first permanent settlement in the county was made in about 1805, on Elk River, near the mouth of Richland Creek, and in the neighborhoods of the present towns of Elkton and Prospect, one of which lies above and the other, below the mouth of said creek, by William Crowson, his four sons and son-in-law, Vincent [Eliab Vinson], Thomas Whitson, Jordan Word, James Ford, James Wilkerson, Parish Sims, Thomas Dodd, John Reynolds, William Jenkins, Thomas Kyle, Thomas Easley, Simon Ford, John Hunnicutt and John and William Price. When these pioneers came they found the county a vast canebrake and forest, the cane being from twenty to twenty-five feet high. The settlers united their forces and cleared away the cane and built log houses for each other and the same kindness and courtesy was extended to each newcomer for years thereafter."
